A Lunatic Says He Loves Me

A Lunatic Says He Loves Me: Chapter 39

Chapter 39: The Divine Comedy 4

After Han Rong’s figure disappeared from sight, He Chen turned and walked into the inner courtyard. There was a stone table in the yard, with a phone on it showing an ongoing call. He Chen took out his phone from his pocket and pressed the hang-up button. The screen of the phone on the table went dark simultaneously.

Ling Feng sat on a stone bench chatting with Bai Xinhuai, “What’s the difference between schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder?”

“Schizophrenic patients perceive the world differently from normal people. For example, the same world that appears in color to us might appear in black and white to them. They might see things that don’t exist, like someone sitting on an empty couch. In short, the ‘perceptions’ of schizophrenic patients are distorted. Dissociative identity disorder, on the other hand, often involves multiple personalities. Generally, the new personality is aware of the main personality, but the main personality is not aware of the new one.”

“You heard what Han Rong said earlier. The shock of his mother’s murder turned him into a morally ambiguous criminal profiler. They can sense each other. Why is that?”

Bai Xinhuai replied, “Perhaps it’s because the new personality was intentionally split by his main personality. To force out a completely new personality with traits he himself didn’t possess, Han Rong might have taken extreme measures, such as self-harm or attempted suicide.”

Ling Feng disagreed, “No. Ever since my cousin told me about Han Rong’s illness, none of the Han Rongs I’ve seen have shown such tendencies.”

Bai Xinhuai suggested, “It could be self-hypnosis. You mentioned that his criminal profiling skills were already proficient during his student years, so he must have had considerable knowledge of psychology and might have known some hypnosis techniques. However, self-hypnosis, especially when successful, is extremely rare.”

Ling Feng said, “I believe he could do it. But what confuses me is that Han Rong clearly has more than two personalities. Initially, he intentionally hypnotized himself to create a highly intelligent criminal profiler to solve the case. But let’s not forget, this is an antisocial personality constantly thinking about committing crimes. Such a malevolent personality would never allow another new personality to emerge. It would be too busy trying to take over Han Rong’s body! And with the real murderer of his mother already apprehended, the main personality Han Rong has no reason to hypnotize himself into creating another personality.”

Bai Xinhuai said, “Maybe his self-hypnosis went wrong, or perhaps a faulty treatment turned his dual personality into multiple personalities.”

“You have a point. When I saw him, I didn’t even know how many different doctors he had seen. There might have been a couple of incompetent ones mixed in, making things worse.” Ling Feng laughed wryly. “But how did he go from having multiple personality disorder to schizophrenia?”

Bai Xinhuai replied, “If every personality is fighting for control of his body, wouldn’t he hear different voices every day? Over time, his nerves and mental state would weaken. Without effective treatment, a mental breakdown would be inevitable.”

“The good news is, with Dr. Ji Yan’s efforts, Han Rong recently stopped experiencing schizophrenia. So, is it possible that his multiple personality disorder could also be cured one day?”

“If you trust me, I can give him a diagnosis.”

Ling Feng rubbed his bald head. “It’s not that I don’t trust you, but it depends on whether he’s willing to let you treat him! Didn’t you hear him say last time that his current personality despises psychologists? I still haven’t figured out what this new personality’s traits are.”

“He came to pray today, so he must have a compassionate heart.”

Ling Feng gave no clear response and looked at He Chen, who was playing with the cat. “Master, what do you think?”

At that moment, a gray mouse scurried out of the meditation hall, with a black shadow swiftly pursuing it. It didn’t take long for the mouse to be caught. The black cat silently shed a few tears before slapping the mouse dead. He Chen pointed at the scene, smiling faintly, “Your junior uncle has already answered.”

Ling Feng rubbed his bald head and laughed, “A cat crying over a mouse’s death is fake compassion. Considering his logical analysis of the case but lack of justice to bring criminals to account, could he be a highly intelligent criminal himself?”

He Chen closed his eyes and began chanting scriptures.

Ling Feng chuckled, “My mom sent over two bags of her homemade dried bamboo shoots, and I brought them for you. When I couldn’t find you, I called you. How coincidental that when you answered, you were with Han Rong, allowing me to overhear your conversation. Master, since you’ve already helped him so much, why not go all the way? How about you give me a divination? How did Han Rong end up like this?”

He Chen said, “Why bother with a divination? He was born with alluring eyes, full of emotion but hiding a blade, easily entangling himself in love debts and life debts. It’s clearly written in the book on physiognomy I gave you. Have you read it?”

Ling Feng, already slipping out the door, replied, “Got some urgent matters at work! I’ll come back another day!”

“Stinky brat you definitely haven’t read it!”

“No time! I’m so busy I could drop dead any moment!”

“Ptui, ptui, ptui! Don’t say such inauspicious things!” He Chen spat on the ground three times and shook his head helplessly.

Ling Feng wasn’t lying. Even though Qin Jiadong had confessed, he still hadn’t finished his overtime. The Serious Crimes Unit of Hucheng District had solved five heinous murder cases in a short period, preventing public outcry and maintaining social order and stability. This achievement impressed the relevant departments in various districts of Xuezhu City. Ling Feng’s superior demanded he write a report to the higher-ups while the iron was hot. However, due to insufficient evidence regarding Ge Jiaqi’s “textual therapy,” he was stuck. The tiny sprouts of hair that finally emerged on his head were scratched off in frustration.

Just then, his earpiece crackled with the voice of the security guard, “Captain Ling, Han Rong is here.”

Ling Feng’s eyes lit up, and he said urgently, “Quick, let him in!”

Soon, leisurely footsteps echoed down the hallway, and before long, Han Rong entered the office, smiling. “Officer Ling, you seem busy.”

Ling Feng replied, “Yes, writing this report is driving me bald! I remember you were great at writing reports back in school…”

Han Rong cut him off, “So what? I’m not going to be your ghostwriter.”

“If you’re not here to help, then why come to the police station at night? To drink tea?”

“Just a post-dinner walk.”

“A walk that covers ten kilometers? Did you have a banquet for dinner?”

“Take a guess.”

After some casual chat, Han Rong inquired about the progress of the Ge Jiaqi case. After finishing a cup of black tea, he bid farewell. Ling Feng continued to wrestle with the bureaucratic report until 3 a.m., having only completed four out of ten thousand words. As the deadline loomed, he reluctantly pulled out his phone and dialed a number.

“Cousin, I need urgent help! I have to write a case summary for the leaders. Do you know any experts who can guide me? Han Rong came by earlier, and I wanted him to help, but he flatly refused.”

A magnetic laugh came from the phone, “Have you forgotten too? Han Rong isn’t the one who writes reports; he’s a hands-on expert. I’m the one who organizes and synthesizes his points!”

Ling Feng slapped his forehead. “Oh, right. I’ve been so busy that my memory’s all jumbled. Oh, someone’s calling me, I’ll talk to you later.” He answered the other call, “Hello, Dr. Ji? What’s up… Yes, Han Rong just came by the station but didn’t say why…”

Ling Feng rambled on, explaining everything in detail until the call ended. After shutting off his phone, he was ready to immerse himself in the report again when footsteps interrupted him.

This time, it was Bai Xinhui, carrying a book she had just picked up from the 24-hour library. Ling Feng glanced at the title: 《24 Methods of Hypnosis》.

“Is there a way to hypnotize someone without them noticing?”

Bai Xinhui replied, “There’s a method called deep dream hypnosis, which involves using special herbs to induce sleep before the hypnosis. This method is challenging but highly effective. After being hypnotized, the person will wake up thinking they are still dreaming, unable to distinguish reality from illusion. Practitioners of this technique are often called ‘Dream Weavers’ because they seem to control dreams.”

“Dream Weavers? Doctors with that skill must be rare. I wonder if I’ll ever meet one in my lifetime.”

Bai Xinhui nodded, “Indeed, they are quite rare. This method of hypnosis is not widely advocated because its primary purpose isn’t therapeutic but transformative. For example, you might be introverted and timid in everyday life, but in a dream, you could become a superhero, doing everything you want. Dream hypnosis can turn a cowardly person into a soldier or transform a model citizen into a morally corrupt criminal. Currently, our country does not promote or encourage ‘Dream Weavers,’ so ‘deep dream hypnosis’ remains theoretical.”

“Being able to write academic papers is quite impressive. At least you don’t have to suffer like I do!”

“The author of the first domestic academic article on controlled dream sleep is someone you know.”

Ling Feng was curious, “Who?”

“Ji Yan.”

After wandering around for a while, Han Rong returned to his apartment. Ji Yan was sitting on the sofa watching TV, specifically his cousin’s drama series “My Paranoid Lover,” with cold, untouched dishes on the dining table.

Han Rong hummed a tune as he walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge to pour some milk.

Ji Yan turned his head and stared intently at Han Rong’s back for a while before suddenly speaking, “You lied. You don’t have all of Han Rong’s memories.”

Han Rong’s hand froze as he poured the milk, a fleeting look of ferocity crossing his face before he smiled and said, “How do you know? Have you planted informants around me? Haha, I suppose you won’t tell me who they are.” He admitted frankly, “Yes, I lied to you. So what? Now that you know I can’t threaten you, are you thinking of killing me like you did with the other Han Rong personalities?”

Ji Yan replied, “I only want to help him survive.”

“A man’s words, deceitful as a ghost. Your level of trickery might fool that innocent guy, but you’re not skilled enough to deceive me.” Han Rong slowly turned around, holding a sharp fruit knife in his left hand, the gleaming blade aimed at his right wrist.

He laughed recklessly, “Don’t think about locking me up in that castle; I’ll kill him before you can start any treatment. If the worst comes to worst, we’ll end in mutual destruction. In any case, I don’t care.”

Ji Yan avoided his gaze, turned the TV volume to mute, and said in a calm, unaffected tone, “Go to bed early and get some rest.”
