A Lunatic Says He Loves Me: Chapter 41
Chapter 41: The Divine Comedy 6
“I’m inevitably linked.” Ling Feng said, “You go to Lei City. The Ji family has many ears and eyes. Be discreet and don’t make any noise.”
“I feel like I’m about to uncover a major conspiracy!” Yuan Fei said excitedly, rubbing his hands. “Leave it to me!”
Lei City First Hospital’s Archives Room.
“Patient records can only be accessed with proper identification.”
Yuan Fei pretended to search his pockets, looking troubled as he said, “I rushed out this time and forgot to bring my ID. Besides, I came here hoping for a stroke of luck. Who knew your two hospitals merged and still kept the old records? How about this: tell me who was his primary doctor back then. I’ll find him to get some information. My friend’s situation is really bad, and this is very important to us. Please!”
The staff member in charge of the archives, seeing his earnest expression, hesitated and then said, “He’s retired. He was the head of the psychiatry department, named Zhao Wei. As for other information, I cannot disclose anything without higher authorization. Please understand.”
“Thank you very much!”
With this basic information, Yuan Fei could locate Zhao Wei’s current whereabouts through the police information network’s internal database. Three hours later, Yuan Fei knocked on Zhao Wei’s door.
“Hello, Dr. Zhao, I’m Yuan Fei, a friend of Ji Yan. I’d like to consult with you about something.”
Zhao Wei, around sixty years old, had a slightly stooped back and a kind, broad face. He adjusted his reading glasses and sighed, recalling, “Ji Yan… How is he now? Still withdrawn?”
Yuan Fei pretended to agree with his answer and asked, “Do you remember what he was like when you first saw him?”
“Of course.” Zhao Wei gazed into the distance as if his thoughts drifted back to a long time ago. “It was a rainy day. A black sedan drove into our hospital. You know, cars like that were rare back then. We all understood that the people inside were either rich or important.”
“A well-dressed man got out of the car, standing by the door and speaking kindly. After a long while, a child finally emerged from the car. He was very beautiful, like a porcelain doll. The hospital staff all liked him, believing he was an angel who had fallen to earth. Later, we learned that the person who brought him for treatment was just his butler… Soon, we arranged for him to be admitted for evaluation. He had a high IQ, an excellent memory, and was quite indifferent to the outside world. We also discovered that he had no normal color vision.”
Yuan Fei asked in surprise, “He is red-green color blind?”
Zhao Wei said, “Perhaps it’s due to the developed brain nerves compressing some of the visual nerves, causing his color vision abnormalities. His world consists only of black and white.”
Yuan Fei asked, “During his hospitalization, did anything unusual happen?”
“In fact, he was very quiet, rejected communication with the outside world, and did not cooperate with our psychological and psychiatric tests. Our preliminary diagnosis was autism. During the entire year of hospitalization, we did not observe any violent behavior. On Christmas, the hospital was very lively. He took the opportunity to ‘escape,’ but returned voluntarily the next morning before the nurse on the ward discovered it. He suddenly had a toy cat with him. After that, he became much more cheerful, started conversing with people, and spent his free time studying in the hospital library. Another year later, he passed the discharge test and left. The hospital’s doctors and nurses bought him many gifts, but he did not take them with him. Before leaving, he only held onto that toy cat of unknown origin. I think it was possibly the gift of the cat that changed him.”
“During his hospitalization, did his parents come to visit him?”
“Not at all.”
After chatting for a while longer, no effective information was gained. Yuan Fei decided to leave, and before he left, he said, “Dr. Zhao, you were once one of the top psychiatrists in the country, specializing in schizophrenia, delusional disorders, and personality disorders. From your casual remarks just now, it seems that Ji Yan was just an ordinary autistic patient. But do you think an ordinary autistic… needs to see a psychiatrist like you?”
Zhao Wei was taken aback, and after a moment, a look of fear appeared on his face.
“At least you’re safely retired,” Yuan Fei said. “Just pretend I never came. Enjoy your retirement.” This was, of course, assuming that Ji Yan had not done anything morally reprehensible after being discharged with his permission.
Three days later, Yuan Fei returned to the Hucheng Serious Crimes Unit with a heavy heart. Ling Feng, who had just stayed up all night finishing a summary report, yawned and asked, “How did it go?”
“The hospital won’t release the records. I found Zhao Wei, the doctor who treated Ji Yan back then, but I still feel he was avoiding the key issues and didn’t tell me the whole truth.”
“Expected.” Ling Feng said, “Doctors have a responsibility to maintain patient confidentiality. What illness did Ji Yan have?”
“Zhao Wei said it was autism. But I don’t think so. From my years of experience, people who are so silent and withdrawn are the ones most worth sounding the alarm about.”
Ling Feng: “A dog that bites doesn’t bark. Let’s go to 717 first. The hospital informed us that Han Rong has split again. Ji Yan is treating him.”
Yuan Fei: “Wasn’t it said that during Ji Yan’s treatment, no one is allowed to be present or disturb him?”
Ling Feng: “I’ll wait until he’s finished and then have a word with him.”
****
The hypnosis that night had only a brief effect. By the next afternoon, Han Rong had unconsciously shifted into another personality. Facing the other’s mocking smile, disdainful expression, and cold eyes, Ji Yan, with a determined resolve, threw Demolition out of the window. Han Rong was startled and immediately turned to retrieve it. At that moment, Ji Yan knocked him out and quickly took him back to 717.
When he woke up again, he was fully restrained, bound like a sacrificial lamb on an electric shock chair.
“You’re really ruthless. Aren’t you afraid that Han Rong will come after you if he dies?” Han Rong’s gaze fell on Demolition in Ji Yan’s pocket, which lay there obediently, clearly afraid of being thrown again.
Ji Yan said with a cold expression, “I will tell him that everything was your doing.”
Han Rong sneered, “Dr. Ji, why do you think our memories won’t connect?”
“Because I know who you are now.” Ji Yan stared at him intently, “You are the original personality born under his distress.”
After a moment of silence, Han Rong smiled and said, “So what? You should know very well what kind of person this is.”
Ji Yan replied calmly, “A genius in antisocial criminal profiling. Once you understand this, it will be easier to handle.”
He moved to the side, turned off all the lights, plunging the room into darkness. After three seconds, Ji Yan turned on the projector, and images began to appear on the white wall.
They were photos of a woman with smiling lines at the corners of her eyes and a gentle demeanor, holding a handsome baby in her arms. The photos spanned about fourteen or fifteen years, showing the baby growing from an innocent infant to a rebellious teenager. The woman gradually became an elegant and noble lady.
These were pictures of Han Rong from his childhood to his teenage years with his mother.
“I found a letter from your mother to the future you at the very end of the photo album.”
Han Rong’s pupils contracted as he was strapped to the electric shock chair, immediately becoming agitated and struggling restlessly.
In his quest to solve his mother’s murder case, Han Rong had taken extreme measures by using self-hypnosis to force out another personality. This antisocial criminal profiling genius was born because of his mother, and as such, she became his only weakness, one that could be fatal.
“Shut up! Don’t read it!”
“Rong’er, by the time you read this letter, you will have already graduated from university. I don’t know if you followed your father’s wishes and applied to the military academy or if you made other choices. Regardless, I hope you chose something you truly love. This will be a job that accompanies you for most of your life. Similarly, I also hope you find a partner soon. That way, even when I’m old and unable to move, unable to be with you, there will be someone to hold your hand and walk with you. This person will accommodate your bad temper, cater to your picky tastes, and keep a light on for you when you come home late…”
“Shut up! Shut up!” Han Rong screamed neurotically, his eyes wide as he greedily listened, trying to memorize every expression in the photos and every word in the letter.
It felt as if a saw was ruthlessly tearing through his nerves. Ultimately, Han Rong, completely broken, screamed hysterically at Ji Yan: “He is Han Rong, and so am I! You keep saying you love me, why do you have to stab me in the heart! Why do you want me to disappear!”
Ji Yan’s expression was neither sad nor happy, as if he were a mere automaton. He said calmly, “You and him, I can only keep one.” With that, he injected Han Rong with the Bluewind Grass serum.
Han Rong had once asked him which personality Ji Yan would choose to keep among all the personalities, and which one would be made to disappear. Now Han Rong had his answer: all the personalities that did not love him would have to disappear.
“You’re so devoted to me, I should give you a gift you’ll never forget.” As Han Rong gradually gave up resisting, he flashed a mischievous smile before closing his eyes.
With a loud bang, the heavily secured door of the treatment room was kicked open. A group of neatly uniformed police officers, led by the hospital director, stormed in. “Ji Yan, what are you doing?”
Ji Yan calmly replied, “As you can see, just normal treatment.”
“What is the syringe in your hand filled with?”
“Just a regular sleeping pill.”
“Can we have it tested?”
“Why?”
Ding Ding said coldly, “Because we suspect you’re lying. You clearly don’t intend to cure Han Rong!”
Ji Yan looked at the hospital director and asked, “Since when?”
“Quite a while ago. Until you became dissatisfied with the hospital agreeing to let Han Rong participate in the police investigation. You were upset that we shattered the perfect world you had built for him and brought Han Rong back to reality. I was shocked by how these statements relate to your ‘Feasibility of Dream Control’ paper.”
“So you had another doctor take over my duties to deliberately test us?”
The director said, “Your paper states: ‘Zhuang Zhou and the butterfly are each other’s special encounter, each other’s only one. The dreamer and the dream-maker share this same relationship. A dreamer can only accept the hypnosis and treatment of one dream-maker throughout their life.’ Whether before or after you, Han Rong has not allowed anyone but you to approach him. Thus, we speculate that you had performed deep hypnosis on him before he was sent to 717, so that in his subconscious, he could only accept your treatment.”
“We suspect that Han Rong’s condition has been worsening and that it is related to you. This may be a major medical incident. Please cooperate with the investigation.”
Ji Yan appeared indifferent, habitually glancing at Han Rong, then suddenly froze as if struck by lightning.
The pair of eyes that should have been tightly closed were now wide open, and the smile that used to be there was replaced by an unfamiliar indifference.
In cases of multiple personalities, usually, the secondary personality’s interference prevents the primary personality from knowing what has happened. However, when the secondary personality intentionally removes the barrier, the memories between the primary and secondary personalities can be shared.
Ji Yan clearly realized what the other Han Rong’s parting words meant: “A gift he would never forget.”
Ling Feng walked over and untied Han Rong’s restraints.
Han Rong rotated his wrist and asked, “Did Chen Sheng send you?”
“Yes. He asked me to investigate the cause of your condition and to protect you. Do you want to see him? He’s outside.”
“Mm.”
Han Rong followed Ling Feng out of the electric shock room. From start to finish, he didn’t look at Ji Yan or say a word to him.
Ji Yan wryly curled the corner of his mouth and murmured to himself, “Why can’t you hide your feelings for someone…”
Bai Xinhui, who followed them out, glanced back. The tone was casual, but the expression was mournful, as if he had lost his heart. She suddenly felt a deep sense of helplessness, a tangible realization that Ji Yan, having completely lost Han Rong, seemed like an incurable mental patient.
The single VIP room at 717 received a new patient. Unlike seven years ago, when there were couples in the rooms, now it was solitary. Soon, more than ten authoritative experts were assigned to conduct psychological and psychiatric tests on Ji Yan, all of which came back normal.
Ling Feng laughed at the report, “Do you think a normal doctor would lock a normal person up for seven years under the guise of illness?”
“I think… both Ji Ge and Han Ge seem a bit off,” Yuan Fei said, pointing to his own head.
“Could the hospital be covering up for him? The Ji family is not to be trifled with.”
“Chen and Ji families have been at each other’s throats… The Ji family protecting Ji Yan at this juncture is not a wise move. Xinhui, what do you think?”
Bai Xinhui said淡淡地: “Ji Yan is a scholar with extensive theoretical knowledge. He might have long memorized the answers to these psychological and psychiatric test questions.”
Ding Ding was astonished, “So many questions, are you kidding?”
Yuan Fei slapped his thigh, “I remember now, Zhao Wei said Ji Yan used to spend a lot of time in the library at Red Heart Hospital. After a year, he took several sets of authoritative test questions before being allowed to leave.”
Bai Xinhui said, “Maybe back then, he had memorized all the test questions for mental illness from Red Heart Hospital.”
“He was only 13 at that time… Can someone memorize all the books related to psychiatry and psychology in an entire library? Normal people can’t do that!”
“Anyone who can keep someone they like locked up for seven years is not a normal person.”
Author’s Note:
You guessed that the doctor was ill, and the article is about him. But the truth is still a ways off… It’ll be sweet soon. Rest assured, it’s a happy ending.
