A Lunatic Says He Loves Me

A Lunatic Says He Loves Me: Extra 3

Extra 3

That summer, Mr. Han and Mrs. Han went out of town for business, leaving six-year-old Han Rong with Old Mr. Han.

Old Mr. Han lived in a place called “Yunxia Village.”

Yunxia Village had excellent Feng Shui, and it was said that a favored concubine had once come from there. The exact dynasty was lost to history, but the elders passed the story down, so there might be some truth to it.

Little Han Rong lifted his rosy face and asked innocently, “Was there really a favored concubine?”

“Yunxia Village is different from other mountain villages because it is filled with phoenix trees. The phoenix only rests on phoenix trees. In ancient times, people planted phoenix trees to attract the king of birds, hoping for its protection. Legend has it that one day, the golden phoenix flew to Kunlun Peak to attend the Queen Mother of the West’s peach banquet. Tired from the journey, it rested on a phoenix tree in a farmer’s house in Yunxia Village. At that time, a pregnant woman in the household was giving birth. When the golden phoenix left, the sky was filled with colorful clouds, and the farmer’s wife gave birth to a daughter. As she grew up, by chance, she entered the palace and gained the emperor’s favor, becoming a favored concubine.”

“So, grandpa, was the favored concubine beautiful?”

“You would have to ask the emperor.”

The town had a thousand-year-old temple with bustling incense offerings. Every year, monks from other places came for a Buddhist exchange conference, making it quite lively. Since one had to pass through Yunxia Village to reach the small town, monks often came and went.

One evening, as it neared dusk, a sudden downpour began. A monk wearing a bamboo hat sought shelter under the eaves, carrying a bamboo basket on his back. The basket was filled with unknown items, and he was covered in dust, his monk’s robes no longer recognizable, with yellow mud dripping down.

Han Rong, sitting on a small stool and eating sunflower seeds while watching the rain, glanced at the monk but said nothing.

The rain continued, becoming heavier. The monk was thin and frail, and the basket looked heavy. Han Rong clapped his hands, shook off the sunflower seed shells, stood up, and pushed the small stool over to the monk. He then took an umbrella and went back to the yard.

When it was completely dark, Old Mr. Han returned from town. Han Rong heard voices outside and ran out with his short legs.

Old Mr. Han led the monk into the living room. “This rain won’t stop anytime soon. Master, please wait inside.”

“Amitabha Buddha, thank you, benefactor. I am called He Chen.” The monk removed his bamboo hat, revealing a face full of wrinkles, looking around fifty or sixty years old.

Old Mr. Han politely recited a line, “To blunt the sharpness, to release the tangles, to harmonize with the light and blend with the dust; to harmonize with the light and blend with the dust is called the profound unity.”

He Chen smiled and responded, “Buddha is the Dao.”

The rain continued endlessly. The small mountain village didn’t have streetlights, so for safety, Old Mr. Han invited He Chen to stay overnight and leave the next morning. He Chen gladly agreed.

The next day, when the rain stopped, He Chen carried his bamboo basket and set off. By evening, he returned, revealing that he and Old Mr. Han had become well-acquainted and that he would stay there during the Buddhist conference.

Han Rong grew more and more suspicious, feeling that He Chen was a charlatan.

“Can you read fortunes?”

“No.”

“Can you divine?”

“The secrets of heaven cannot be revealed.”

“……”

On a tranquil night, Han Rong sat in the phoenix tree, gazing at the stars in the sky.

He Chen asked, “What is little benefactor thinking about?”

“I’m wondering if the favored concubine was beautiful.”

He Chen sighed, “You’re fixated on appearances.”

“What do you mean?”

The monk explained in plain language, “There is a knife above the character for lust 1. At such a young age, having so many thoughts about beauty, you’re likely to be doomed by it in the future.”

“……”

The old man is really something!

When the Buddhist conference ended, He Chen still stayed at Old Mr. Han’s house, claiming, “I’m waiting for someone.”

“Waiting for whom?”

“The favored concubine.”

“……”

The old man is talking nonsense again!

In town, someone was getting married and asked Old Mr. Han to preside over the ceremony for two days. According to custom, the first night required an overnight stay. Therefore, that night, only Han Rong and He Chen were at home. As Han Rong was drifting in and out of sleep, he suddenly heard a commotion outside. Rubbing his eyes, he threw off the covers, got out of bed in a daze, and went barefoot toward the sound.

In the living room, a few distinguished-looking strangers were standing, dressed in suits, with straight backs and serious expressions.

“Master, the lady has come all the way from Nanming Temple to here. Seeing her sincerity, I hope you can assist her.”

He Chen stood with his hands together and head bowed, silent. His solemn demeanor was quite different from his usual playful self.

“Please step outside for a moment.” At this point, a woman sitting in a high-backed chair with a child in her arms spoke. The dim light couldn’t hide her ethereal beauty, as if some people just shine naturally, even when doing nothing.

“His high fever won’t subside, and he remains unconscious… I’ve consulted many famous doctors and visited many hospitals, but none have been effective… In desperation, I asked a fortune-teller who said that Yan’er is being haunted by something unclean, but they too were helpless.”

He Chen asked, “Did they tell you the reason?”

“Because…” The woman fell silent.

“Because this is a business of killing. No matter how glorious the family’s military achievements, they are built on a foundation of bones. The accumulated karma of killing cannot be erased, only reduced… After he recovers, keep him away from weapons. If he continues down this path, not only will there be no way for others, but your families will also reach an end.”

“But…” She hesitated.

“Your son is intelligent and exceptionally gifted. You have high hopes for him, but listen to me: what goes to extremes will eventually turn against you.”

“Alright. Thank you, Master.”

“Things from below are very yin, and they fear the most yang thing, which is a child’s urine. Place him in the room and let Rong Xiaozi 2 go outside to urinate. Tell whatever is haunting him that it cannot take him away.”

Han Rong, hiding behind the screen, fell asleep after eavesdropping for a short while. He Chen woke him up and asked with a smile if he wanted to go outside to urinate.

The six-year-old was already aware of modesty, understanding that exposing himself in public was improper, especially urinating in front of others. Han Rong shook his head vigorously like a rattle drum and said sternly, “That’s not proper!”

“Mom said you can only take off your pants in front of your wife!”

He Chen said, “Then you’ll have to wait until he grows up and makes a pledge.”

Han Rong looked over and saw that the baby was sleeping peacefully, with porcelain-white skin, rosy lips, and delicate features, like a little fairy carved from jade.

“……”

At this age, children have no mature concept of “husband and wife” or “marriage.” They simply see a “wife” as a playmate. Han Rong thought that once this pretty baby woke up, they could become good friends. So, he dashed outside to urinate, and after finishing, he stood with his hands on his hips and declared to the air, “From now on, she’s under my protection. No one can bully her!”

In the early hours of the morning, the baby’s fever subsided, and the woman prepared to leave.

Han Rong, exhausted and rubbing his eyes, mustered up his energy to wave them off and called out, “Sister, come find me when you grow up!”

The baby, lying quietly on her mother’s shoulder, looked up at Han Rong, then blinked innocently and gave a pure, innocent smile.

“Cat!”

He called out in a high-pitched voice.

“Cat?” Han Rong turned his head to see He Chen holding a black cat with emerald-green eyes.

At this moment, the engine roared to life, and the army-green jeep drove away.

Han Rong exclaimed, “I don’t even know her name!”

“It’s never too late to ask later.”

“Will we meet again?”

He Chen looked at the towering ancient trees in the courtyard, scratched the black cat’s chin, and said, “The phoenix only rests on the phoenix tree. Even if you want to run away, you can’t escape.”

Translator Notes
  1. 色字头上一把刀 – Lascivious activities can lead to bitter consequences. This character “刀” for knife looks like the top character for “色” which is lust. I think. Fell free to correct me if I’m wrong[]
