After Saving The Universe A Thousand Times: Chapter 14
Chapter 14: All Gods’ Descent 14
The person who arrived was indeed Kale.
Upon reaching the rooftop, he neither glanced at the corpse in the corner emanating a bloody scent nor surveyed the surroundings to check for traps. He didn’t even seem surprised by Dong Jin’s presence. Standing under the endless moonlight, he spoke in a low, casual tone:
“I just found out today that the rooftop door was locked.”
“So, Dong Jin, tell me. If the rooftop door has always been locked, and there’s never been a trace of damage… how exactly did you, a Supernatural being, manage to leave here and get to the first floor six days ago?”
Even though it wasn’t really the right time, Dong Jin couldn’t help but silently cue the lifeless Wuli lying not far away:
Wuli, Wuli, learn from him, won’t you? Now *this* is what it means to get to the point. If you had even a fraction of Kale’s skills, how could I have succeeded in ambushing you?
After this mental jab, Dong Jin cleared away all emotion, quietly watching Kale from the shadows.
Though it was well into the night, this Supernatural being was still dressed in a dark red suit. The only difference was that this time, the pattern on his suit jacket wasn’t random geometric patches but, through a clever interplay of red and gold, outlined a jester.
If this were any other place, Dong Jin might’ve taken a moment to admire Kale’s sense of style. But not here, not now.
Kale’s gaze had changed.
In this moment, he resembled a predator on the verge of pouncing, calmly waiting for his prey to step into the trap.
Kale was not Wuli.
Things had reached this point, and there was no use in trying to talk his way out of it. This would be a fight.
With his decision made, Dong Jin abandoned any need for further disguise. Casually, he pulled off his pure black tie and used it to bind back his obstructing long hair.
Kale didn’t stop him, even watching with something close to amusement. Not only had he wanted to savor Dong Jin for some time, but tonight Dong Jin was wearing the suit Kale had chosen for him five days prior. Dong Jin was already his type, but tonight, he fit every one of Kale’s preferences perfectly.
So even though Dong Jin’s identity and motives were unclear, Kale was more than willing to give him a grand ending.
After leisurely tying his last knot, Dong Jin walked step by step toward Kale.
When he was just inches away, and Kale still hadn’t made a move, Dong Jin struck first.
He placed his right hand on the dagger at his left waist, drawing the first strike with lightning speed.
In the instant Kale leaned back to dodge, Dong Jin switched his grip, holding the dagger between his index and middle fingers. He spun it and passed it to his left hand, then struck upward with the blade facing down in a second blow.
Then, he instantly released his left hand, letting the dagger spin freely in mid-air, until it landed back in his right hand, sweeping in a third strike from right to left.
These three strikes—seamless and thunderous—unleashed in just three seconds, concentrated a relentless assault.
But even such a skillful trio of blows only left a modest scratch on Kale’s neck.
Seeing this, Dong Jin silently flicked the blood from the tip of his dagger.
Even though he hadn’t sacrificed any lifespan for these strikes, he had activated his “Eye of Truth” to the fullest extent, using every bit of combat knowledge he’d gained over a thousand nights.
Still, he hadn’t expected that Kale would only sustain such a minimal injury.
Moreover… Dong Jin recalled Kale’s dagger-blocking stance, a faint smile, part mockery, appearing on his lips.
In those thousand fatal midnights, he had fought countless times against Lei Ming, who wielded a halberd. He knew well the posture of a long weapon user in combat.
Undoubtedly, Kale’s weapon of choice wasn’t a dagger, yet he handled it effortlessly.
—He couldn’t defeat Kale.
In that moment, the cruel truth became painfully clear.
Dong Jin wouldn’t delude himself by claiming he wasn’t adept with daggers to justify this loss.
He couldn’t win. Kale hadn’t even taken him seriously in that seemingly life-threatening exchange.
Until now, Dong Jin had thought that the kind of formidable, instinct-driven arrogance that bred despair existed only in madmen like Lei Ming. But tonight, this first NPC trial had quietly shown him that there is always someone stronger.
But it didn’t matter. If he couldn’t win fairly, he could burn his lifespan to gain an edge.
Just as he had in those thousand midnights.
Calming his mind instantly, Dong Jin closed his eyes. When he opened them again, he was completely composed.
Kale noticed Dong Jin’s shift in demeanor, but, perhaps out of the inherent arrogance of a higher being, or because he believed the outcome was already decided, Kale didn’t attack. Instead, he gazed up at the moon high in the night sky and said:
“I was admiring the moon tonight when I suddenly caught a whiff of blood from above, so I instinctively came to the rooftop.”
“Until tonight, I rarely opened windows, nor had I ever stepped foot here. But for some reason, I was in the mood tonight. So I opened a window, came up to the rooftop, and that’s how I found you.”
“Dong Jin, perhaps you haven’t realized, but whenever you appear in the night, the moon is sure to follow.”
Dong Jin raised his eyes to glance at the moon and replied coolly, “You’re mistaken.”
“It’s not that the moon appears whenever I do. It’s because a god who possesses the moon is watching me, the moon appears again and again.”
——The moon’s presence was never a mark of his favor; it was the gaze of a god of the night.
Kale seemed intrigued by the topic, asking in a strangely ambiguous tone, “Is there really a god in your universe?”
Hearing this, Dong Jin smiled for the first time that night.
——“There are gods in this world, of course.”
——“Only, there’s never been a god who loves me.”
As his words fell, a quiet snicker, audible only to Dong Jin, pierced the silence.
It was Lei Ming, laughing.
After sneering, Lei Ming ignored a series of question marks in the commentary dedicated live broadcast room and stood up directly to leave the audience.
Outside the commentary room, the God of Night and Drama could no longer restrain himself and called out, half warning, half playfully, “Dong Jin.”
He was well aware of what had transpired on the rooftop tonight.
From the moment Kale appeared at midnight on the first day, he recognized him as one of Kai’s incarnations, but at the time, he hadn’t paid much attention to it.
Because as the God of Revelry in the supreme universe, Kai’s favorite pastime was to seek out fun. It was perfectly normal for him to seal his memories and don an ordinary face to enter the “Divine Selection” trial grounds.
Yet, Lei Ming had never expected that when he saw Kale again in the darkness— or rather, Kai— he would be in such a state.
If he had to describe it, tonight’s Kai resembled a beast in heat.
Not only was he chatty, but he also allowed his opponent to charge up, violating every taboo in battle.
What a pity. If only he had been this carefree when Lei Ming was competing with him for the God of Drama’s essence, his grave grass would have grown ten feet high by now, and he wouldn’t still be out here being an eyesore.
An eyesore to the extent that not only did they share the same divine essence, but he also inexplicably went after the same prey.
He was really fed up with that arrogant lunatic.
Completely unaware that his arrogance exceeded even Kai’s, Lei Ming forced himself to suppress the countless grudges he held against Dong Jin from the many midnights past and grinned wildly, saying:
“Dong Jin, call my name.”
Hearing his name once again, Dong Jin on the rooftop finally confirmed that the voice he heard in the darkness was not a figment of his imagination.
It was indeed Lei Ming speaking to him.
At this moment, the deity continued to command in a deep voice, looking down at him:
“Call it.”
“In the dark night, you are absolutely the strongest.”
Having known Kai for nearly ten thousand years, Lei Ming understood his character better than anyone else.
It would have been fine if he hadn’t paid much attention before, but once he did, he immediately realized that Dong Jin was the person Kai would fall for at first sight.
Even though Lei Ming had never believed in such things as love, he could not deny that if there truly was something like love at first sight in the supreme universe, then the person who initially defined and practiced this concept had to be Kai.
Because he was the God of Revelry, and his life’s creed was to pursue the moments of ultimate pleasure.
And at this moment, Dong Jin was almost the epitome of the instant Kai sought.
So Lei Ming could no longer allow Kai to continue focusing on Dong Jin.
He had spent thousands of midnights, exhausting all his wealth to finally find Dong Jin’s trace in reality, and it was not to let Kai swoop in and steal him away.
Dong Jin was his only divine selection.
Before the “Divine Selection” ceremony concluded, he would not allow anyone to touch him.
