Cloud Raising Little Zombies: Chapter 22

ZOMBIE EMPEROR CULTIVATION

22. The weather has turned cold; let the base leader’s crystal nucleus disappear. If the news is false, Ye You will lead the mutated animals back to the base and wait for the zombie siege…

The residence chosen by Director Lin was a small villa with a yard, just a few minutes’ drive from the base’s main gate.

After being unsettled and without a fixed place for over half a month during the apocalypse, Director Lin had finally settled down. He hummed a little tune as he watered the mutated plants he had brought along.

A few mutated plants, cramped in their narrow flower pots, were suffering in their confined space.

Taking advantage of the owner’s absence, the mutated plants quietly pulled their roots out of the pots and reestablished themselves in the yard.

By the time Ye You and his brother arrived at the villa, the small yard in front of the villa was already occupied by various mutated plants, taking up half of the space.

The other half was occupied by the lazy white lion.

    “Roar—”

Upon seeing Ye You, the white lion raised its head and roared a greeting.

Ye You patted the large head that the white lion extended toward him and shifted his gaze to the other side of the yard.

The mutated plants stood rigidly in place, not daring to move even when the wind blew.

Ye You wasn’t concerned about the mutated plants’ actions of re-rooting. He simply used his mental power to trim off all the branches that had extended beyond the yard.

Director Lin heard the noise and turned around, seeing Ye You and his brother standing outside the door. He put down the watering can and said with a smile:

“You’re back. I bought some food at the base and made a meal. Let’s eat first.”

    The group entered the house.

Su Zi’an noticed the dishes on the table and instinctively said, “There’s the spicy chicken cubes that Ge likes.”

As soon as he spoke, Su Zi’an paused, looking somewhat embarrassedly at Ye You, “Ge…”

He wasn’t sure if it was because Ye You had always been by his side, calling his name and patting his head, or because he hadn’t seen any zombie marks on Ye You for a long time and hadn’t used time reversal to maintain his condition.

Su Zi’an momentarily forgot that Ye You had become a zombie and had lost interest in human food.

Ye You stopped in his tracks and glanced at the dining table.

The vibrant red chili peppers and chicken mixed together didn’t stimulate any appetite.

Ye You walked toward the sofa where a pair of magazines were placed.

Director Lin came out of the kitchen carrying three bowls of rice. He seemed completely unaware of the earlier events and didn’t think it strange that Ye You wasn’t eating.

“Why is Xiao An still standing? Sit down,” Director Lin said, putting down the bowls and gesturing for them to take a seat.

    “…Mm, thank you.”

The aroma of the meal filled the room, while in the yard, the ivy extended its leaf stalks to grab the watering can and water itself.

    The leaves swayed joyfully.

A breeze blew, and the ivy quickly hid the watering can under its leaves, standing still and motionless.

After a moment, a young law enforcer in a black uniform landed outside the yard.

The young enforcer rang the doorbell.

Director Lin and Su Zi’an, who were eating inside, both looked up.

Su Zi’an glanced at Ye You on the sofa and saw Director Lin serving some meat to Lin Yinyin. They both got up and went to the door.

Moments later, they returned with a small box each.

Su Zi’an ran to the sofa where Ye You was sitting, nervously saying, “Ge, the base gave us some crystal nuclei.”

He opened the box to reveal dozens of grain-sized crystal nuclei laid out at the bottom.

Ye You was flipping through the base’s “New Century Weekly” and glanced up when he heard.

These few crystal nuclei weren’t even enough for a single bite.

【The younger brother is as nervous as if showing a test paper to their parents.】

【Patting the charging treasure brother, he just wants to make Ge happy.】

【Holding the umbrella for you, finding food for you, giving you my crystal nuclei, wuwuwu this is what a divine sibling bond looks like.】

“I really do like the zombie faction, but I suddenly feel a wave of sympathy.”

Seeing the comment, Ye You thought it might not be polite to directly express disdain, so he pursed his lips and came up with a topic instead, saying:

“Isn’t it said that B-level ability users get 100 crystal nuclei per month?”

But there didn’t seem to be 100 cores here.

“This is an advance payment; the remaining half will be given to us after we’ve stayed for a month,” Su Zi’an explained as he closed the lid and handed the box to Ye You. “Ge, you keep it.”

At this moment, Director Lin also approached, offering a box and saying, “Yinyin has fewer, only 5 cores. According to the previous agreement, the crystal nuclei will be managed and distributed by Xiao You.”

“Then let’s divide them now,” Ye You said, taking the two boxes and pouring out the crystal nuclei.

According to the rules, Director Lin and Lin Yinyin would get 20%, Su Zi’an and Ye You would each get 30%, and the remaining 20% would be used to support the mutated plants and animals.

Of course, that’s just how it was calculated on the surface.

In reality, when it came down to distribution, Director Lin and his daughter got 20%, and the rest all went to Ye You.

Ye You handed 11 crystal nuclei to Director Lin and kept the rest for himself.

Director Lin left with a smile on his face.

After all, he and his daughter initially only had 5 crystal nuclei, so after this distribution, their share had doubled.

Su Zi’an didn’t get a single crystal nucleus, but he was still quite satisfied as he returned to the dining table to eat.

    【Silly little brother.】

【You Zai: You might make a small profit, but I definitely won’t lose out.】

【The only one who walked away empty-handed is silly little brother.】

【No, no, he gained a brother. As the only one who can get Zai Zai to take crystal nuclei out of the small bag to feed him, the power bank is the real winner.】

【As long as little brother stays a power bank for a day, my Zai will take care of him for a day.】

Director Lin brought back all the newsletters from the base.

When the night was quiet, while the rest of the team either slept or struggled in pain after consuming crystal nuclei, Ye You sat on the sofa, reading the newsletters one by one.

From the newsletters, Ye You learned that the leader of the A City base was named Ji Xuelin, an almost omnipotent ability user.

From natural abilities like wind, fire, lightning, and thunder, to special abilities like teleportation and healing, there was nothing he couldn’t do.

In the eyes of the people at the A City base, their leader was like a god.

They believed that under his leadership, a new era of human civilization could be created.

As Ye You read the newsletters, the viewers in the live stream were also reading along.

【You might not believe this, but I’m seriously reading an in-game magazine in a game live stream.】

【I knew this game was famous for its attention to detail, but I never expected it to be so obsessively detailed that even a magazine could be made so complete.】

【This magazine series is probably supplemental to the plot. The base leader really has something going on, definitely has the potential to be the main villain.】

【According to what’s written in the magazine, that boss is an all-around ability user, while our Zai Zai only has dual abilities—not looking good, not looking good.】

【What are you talking about? You Zai is in the zombie faction, a man with both the protagonist and villain scripts in hand. How could he not win!】

    Three days later.

The news that a certain B-level dark ability user had failed to advance, lost their ability, and became mentally impaired spread throughout the base.

“So if you fail to advance, you can turn into a fool.”

Su Zi’an was out exploring the base with Ye You and the others when he overheard people discussing it and was somewhat surprised.

It was the first time he’d heard of such a thing. He’d always thought that failing to advance just meant death—a painful death at that.

Director Lin tightened his grip on Lin Yinyin’s hand.

Absorbing abilities to level up not only caused immense pain but also had the risk of turning someone into a fool if they failed.

But in this apocalypse, strength was everything. Yet, as a father, Director Lin couldn’t tell his daughter to stop consuming crystal nuclei, to stop trying to get stronger.

As a father, not only could he not protect his daughter, but he also had to rely on her for protection…

Lin Yinyin, however, seemed unaware of the shift in Director Lin’s emotions. Her black beast ears twitched, and she looked up softly, saying:

“The enforcer uncle from yesterday is coming this way.”

The only enforcer Lin Yinyin would remember was that wind ability user.

Director Lin composed himself and looked down the street, where he indeed saw an enforcer in a black uniform flying towards them.

Su Zi’an and Ye You also stopped, waiting for the ability user to land in front of them.

“Good morning,” the enforcer greeted as soon as he landed. “I have information about an A-level mutated animal. I wonder if you’re interested.”

Ye You, who had seemed lost in thought, suddenly looked directly at the enforcer.

Seeing this, Su Zi’an knew that his brother was very interested.

“A-level mutated animals are supposed to be quite rare, right? Is your information accurate?” Su Zi’an asked.

In the past half month, they had spent their time either traveling to A City Base or searching for mutated plants, animals, or zombies with large crystal nuclei.

According to the base’s classification, they were looking for those with A-level crystal nuclei.

They had been searching for half a month without finding any, and now, just a few days after arriving at the base, someone suddenly claimed to have information about an A-level mutated animal.

Su Zi’an was somewhat skeptical about its authenticity.

“Of course it’s accurate. This information came directly from the base leader,” the enforcer replied confidently.

Su Zi’an’s impression of the base leader was still that of the person who invented the crystal nucleus converter, so he wasn’t sure how reliable this information was.

However, Ye You’s eyes shifted slightly as he said, “Let’s find a place to talk.”

The enforcer, hearing this, looked at Su Zi’an and Director Lin, who was holding the little girl’s hand.

To his surprise, he found that instead of being offended, they were inviting him to their place to discuss further.

Could it be that the one making the real decisions in this group was that young man without any abilities?

As they arrived at the villa, the enforcer took an extra glance at the lush plants in the yard.

The plants here seemed to have grown a lot more luxuriant compared to a few days ago.

As he was wondering about this, his attention was drawn to the white lion nearby.

What a majestic lion! If only he could have one like that.

    “Roar—”

The white lion let out a loud roar.

The enforcer was so startled that he nearly used his ability to fly away.

The physical strength of a human was no match for these mutated animals.

At such a close distance, if that lion decided to attack, he wouldn’t stand a chance.

“Mao Mao~” Lin Yinyin ran over and buried herself in the lion’s mane.

The white lion then turned its head to watch the girl play.

“Don’t worry, enforcer comrade. Mao Mao has a very gentle temperament,” Director Lin said with a smile as he led the enforcer inside.

Ye You walked in last, casting a cold glance at the wildly growing mutated plants.

The mutated plants concealed their presence, remaining utterly still, as if they were nothing more than ordinary flora. Mutated plants are known for their exceptional ability to hide their aura. The enforcer likely hadn’t noticed anything unusual.

Ye You stepped inside the house.

The group gathered around the sofa.

The enforcer took out a small notebook and retrieved several photos from a pocket in the back pages.

“These are photos transmitted by the base’s aerial drone earlier this morning.”

The enforcer initially intended to hand the photos to Su Zi’an, but recalling the previous interaction, he silently extended them further, passing them to Ye You instead.

    Ye You took the photos.

The first photo was an aerial shot of a valley, with a dense swarm of dark shadows flying within it. The subsequent photos were zoomed in, revealing that those shadows were crows, with pitch-black feathers and dark eyes.

The last photo focused on a particularly unusual red-eyed crow. It was small, nearly covered by the wingspan of the other crows. It was staring in the direction of the camera, its beak slightly open, with a faint red glow gathering within.

After examining the photos, Ye You handed them to Su Zi’an.

Once everyone had seen them, the enforcer placed the last photo on the coffee table.

“It destroyed the aerial drone. Based on the final energy analysis transmitted back, the base leader determined that this red-eyed crow is an A-level mutated creature.”

【The base leader again. Now, whenever I hear ‘base leader,’ I just think there’s some conspiracy.】

【The weather has turned cold; let the base leader’s crystal nucleus disappear.】

“Where is it located?” Ye You asked.

The enforcer was momentarily stunned before realizing that Ye You was asking about the creature’s lair. He quickly retrieved a map from the notebook’s pocket.

“It’s in this valley,” the enforcer said, pointing to a red mark on the map.

Ye You picked up the map.

Su Zi’an looked at the enforcer and asked with a smile, “Information about an A-level mutated creature—you’re just giving it to us like that? No crystal nuclei required or anything?”

“No, no need,” the enforcer replied, realizing these newcomers might not be familiar with how things worked at the base. He then explained, “In our base, whether it’s information about zombies or mutated creatures, it’s always shared with the entire base community.”

“Actually, the information about the red-eyed crow was sent to the Ability Users Mission Office early this morning. The mission should already be posted there.”

“Oh? Then why did you come here…” Su Zi’an continued to scrutinize the enforcer.

Since the information would be released at the Mission Office, why did the enforcer make this trip? There must be some purpose behind it.

The enforcer replied, “I’m responsible for contacting teams with C or B-level ability users to see if they’re interested in the red-eyed crow. After all, it’s an A-level mutated creature. A single team alone won’t be able to handle it. Interested teams need to discuss and set a date to form a group to take on the mission and go to that valley.”

Ye You put down the map and said, “We’ll take the mission.”

The enforcer glanced at Su Zi’an and Director Lin’s expressions. Seeing that they were allowing the non-ability user youth to make decisions, he nodded and said, “Alright, please register your team members.”

“Who will be the team leader?” The enforcer picked up his notebook and pen.

    This time, no one spoke.

After three seconds of silence, Su Zi’an said, “It’ll be me, Su Zi’an.”

The enforcer wrote down the name in the awkward silence and then asked, “Team members?”

“My brother… Ye You, Lin Yinyin, and Director Lin.”

Su Zi’an was used to calling Director Lin ‘Director Lin’ and didn’t realize that wasn’t his actual name. Director Lin didn’t say anything, so the enforcer wrote it down as well.

The enforcer reviewed the final list. It’s rather unusual for an ability user team to include a regular person, but one of them is a three-year-old beast tamer’s guardian, and another seems to be the actual team leader.

Given the special circumstances, the enforcer wasn’t sure what to say. He simply said he would notify them if there were any updates and then left.

Director Lin saw the enforcer out, while Su Zi’an picked up the map from the table and asked Ye You:

“Ge, do you really think that crow is an A-level mutated creature?”

“It might be, or it might not be,” Ye You replied calmly.

Su Zi’an asked, “If it isn’t, wouldn’t we be making a wasted trip?”

“It won’t be a wasted trip,” Ye You said.

Su Zi’an didn’t understand how Ye You could be so certain. He looked into Ye You’s dark eyes and felt a moment of disorientation.

He knew Ye You carried a blue morning glory with him. Anyone within a certain range around Ye You would be affected by the morning glory’s hallucinatory effects.

With two pea-sized crystal nuclei, Ye You’s control over his abilities was even more refined. The scent of the morning glory made people deeply feel that he was just an ordinary person.

Even though Su Zi’an knew it was an illusion, the Ye You he saw still had black hair and eyes.

Su Zi’an was momentarily lost in thought.

It wasn’t until Ye You tilted his head in confusion that Su Zi’an snapped back to reality. He picked up a water cup from the table and took a sip, the cold water helping to clear his mind a bit.

“Ge, do you have any plans?” Su Zi’an asked.

“Not sure if it’s an A-level crystal nucleus, and it wouldn’t be a waste of a trip. There must be another plan,” Ye You said.

“Bring over the ones we left in the village,” he added.

“Mutated animals? So soon?” Su Zi’an was a bit surprised.

They hadn’t even fully grasped the situation at the base yet; how could they bring the mutated animals over already?

    “Mmh,” Ye You nodded.

What he didn’t mention was that he also needed to contact the zombies he had raised and have them gather zombies from the surrounding cities.

If the information about the A-level mutated animal turned out to be false, Ye You would lead the mutated animals back to the base and wait for the zombies to surround it. When the ability users were busy defending the base from the zombies, he would go after the A-level crystal nuclei in the base.

If the information about the A-level mutated animal was true, then that would be even better. With the A-level crystal nucleus he would consume to reach A-level himself, he could influence a wider area and summon a larger scale of zombies to surround the base. He’d also gain an extra A-level crystal nucleus.

The enforcer came back in the afternoon, looking apologetic.

“I’m really sorry. The B-level ability user teams have all taken other missions and are currently unavailable.

“The C-level ability user teams, seeing that only your B-level team has taken the mission, are too afraid to participate.

“We won’t be able to assemble a team to hunt the A-level mutated crow in the short term.”

Director Lin found this a bit strange. “How many B-level ability user teams does the base have? They’ve all taken other missions?”

The enforcer, worried they might think the base’s ability users were excluding them, quickly explained:

“There were originally five B-level ability user teams. One of them, with a B-level dark ability user, had a failed promotion last night and lost his abilities, so that team disbanded.”

Su Zi’an and the others had heard about this, so they asked, “What about the other four teams?”

“The remaining teams: two are affiliated with the base’s official duties, responsible for protecting the base and the base leader. They can’t leave their posts without orders from the base leader.

“One team left for a mission a week ago and hasn’t returned yet. The fourth team just departed half an hour ago to meet an envoy from the northern base, so they’re also unavailable.”

Hearing the enforcer’s explanation, Ye You almost laughed.

“So, it means only our team of four is going to complete this mission?”

The enforcer scratched his head. “The mission to hunt the A-level mutated crow can be put on hold for now. We’ll assemble a team when other squads are available.”

“How long will that take?” Ye You asked.

He wasn’t really interested in teaming up; it just seemed like these coincidences were too well arranged.

Ye You was curious about what the base leader was planning. Was he deliberately preventing them from leaving? Or just allowing their team to leave?

“At least a week, at most a month,” the enforcer said, pulling out a printed sheet from his notebook. “However, if you can accept another related mission in the meantime—”

Su Zi’an noticed Ye You seemed very interested, so he took the paper and asked, “Is it related to the A-level mutated crow?”

“Yes,” the enforcer replied. “This is a request from the Ability Users Mission Office.”

    The enforcer explained:

“You are the only available B-level ability user team. The mission office hopes you can provide some information about the mutated crows. For each piece of information provided, there’s a corresponding crystal nucleus reward.”

“The approximate number of crows: 5 crystal nuclei; the activity range of the crows: 5 C-level crystal nuclei… The abilities of the A-level mutated crow: 50 C-level crystal nuclei; the range and strength of the A-level mutated crow’s abilities: 50 C-level crystal nuclei.”

Su Zi’an read out the tasks and rewards one by one.

Even though he was used to seeing crystal nuclei, he couldn’t help but be amazed.

The base really was rich and generous.

With such tempting rewards, Ye You was sure that the base leader wanted their team to leave the base alone.

He wasn’t sure if the leader had discovered something or had taken a special interest in someone’s abilities within their team.

“Alright, we’ll take this mission,” Ye You said.

Once Ye You decided, Su Zi’an and the others naturally had no objections.

The enforcer was pleasantly surprised by their easy agreement and happily completed their registration.

Before leaving, he reminded them, “Just focus on completing the earlier tasks. The later ones related to the A-level mutated crow are too dangerous. A slip-up could cost you your lives.”

Director Lin sent the enforcer off.

At the enforcer’s suggestion, they also bought a portable camera.

The information about the mutated crows, of course, needed evidence, not just their word.

“When are we leaving?” Director Lin asked upon returning.

Ye You replied, “As soon as possible.”

So, Director Lin and Su Zi’an went to pack their things.

Half an hour later, the tour vehicle departed from the base, followed by the large and powerful white lion.

Director Lin and Lin Yinyin were in the vehicle.

Ye You and Su Zi’an rode on the white lion, hunting zombies and mutated plants and animals in the surrounding area.

“Have all the zombies around here been cleared out? We can’t find any…” Su Zi’an said, his voice trailing off.

After all, Ye You was now a zombie himself, so talking about zombies felt a bit odd.

However, it seemed Ye You didn’t have much of a sense of belonging to the zombie race, nor to humans.

Despite being around Ye You all the time, Su Zi’an sometimes felt like Ye You was walking alone in the apocalypse, and all the creatures with crystal nuclei in the world were Ye You’s prey.

The zombies near the base had indeed been cleaned out thoroughly, and it wasn’t until the white lion had traveled a few kilometers that they encountered a small group of zombies.

In Ye You’s eyes, there was not much difference between ability users and zombies, as both had crystal nuclei, didn’t they?

However, the other members of the team were all pure humans.

Unless an ability user did something truly heinous, they wouldn’t be able to get past their own moral barriers.

Over time, Ye You had been influenced.

When there were enough crystal nuclei, Ye You wouldn’t act against ability users, at least not in front of the team members.

The valley where the crows were located was not far from the base, only a two-hour drive.

An hour and a half into the journey, the crow valley was already within Ye You’s mental coverage range.

Ye You “saw” a large number of crystal nuclei the size of rice grains and red beans, all from the crow flock.

Among the small crystal nuclei, one the size of a grape stood out.

The news about the A-level mutated crows turned out to be true.

The base leader must be a good person.

Ye You had just given the base leader a “good person” card when he suddenly sensed a man appearing behind them. The grape-sized ash-gray crystal nucleus in the man’s mind stood out prominently.

What a day—an A-level crystal nucleus that had been elusive for half a month was now unexpectedly close by, with two of them nearby.

Without hesitation, Ye You activated his abilities.

Several green leaves from the rose vines flew out of Ye You’s pocket at high speed towards the ash-gray crystal nucleus.

Almost simultaneously, the man raised his hand and threw two black energy balls.

The targets of the energy balls were Su Zi’an beside Ye You and Lin Yinyin in the tour vehicle.

If struck by an A-level ability user, they could potentially die.

Ye You hesitated for a moment.

In that extremely brief moment, Ye You channeled all the plant-based energy within him into the leaves he sent out.

The rose leaves suddenly grew in mid-air, forming a series of vine nets that blocked the path of the black energy balls.

The black energy balls penetrated the first vine net.

The energy balls became slightly smaller but still pierced through the second vine net.

As the energy balls were about to penetrate the fifth vine net, they completely dissipated and vanished.

With the energy balls gone, the vine nets, under Ye You’s control, continued their flight towards the man with the A-level crystal nucleus.

The man, seemingly unprepared for this turn of events, had his smirk freeze as he had no time to react before being ensnared by the net.

The barbed hooks embedded into the man’s flesh, causing him to scream in agony.

Ye You tightened the vine net and controlled the hooks to root and sprout within the man’s flesh.

    Suddenly, the man disappeared.

The vine net continued to obey Ye You’s commands, tightly entangled, but the man’s figure was no longer within it.

Su Zi’an, hearing the scream, turned around and saw a large amount of rose vine on the ground.

He recognized it as his brother’s ability.

    Were there enemies just now?

Seeing Ye You’s serious expression, it seemed the enemy had not been resolved yet. Su Zi’an quickly grabbed Ye You’s arm and activated his ability.

Time rewound, restoring Ye You’s physical state to 10 seconds earlier.

Su Zi’an was very familiar with this use of his ability.

But Su Zi’an didn’t expect that even a 10-second rewind would completely exhaust his B-level abilities.

Feeling drained, Su Zi’an collapsed forward.

If Ye You hadn’t promptly grabbed the back of his collar, Su Zi’an would have rolled off the white lion’s head.

Ye You spread out his mental energy, but the ash-gray crystal nucleus had completely vanished from his perception.

He wasn’t sure if the other party used some method to hide it or if they had discovered that he was also an ability user and decided to retreat before assessing his strength.

Ye You jumped down from the white lion’s head, finally tossing Su Zi’an into the tour vehicle.

Director Lin was also alerted by the scream and looked back at Ye You with concern.

“They’ve already left. Keep driving,” Ye You said.

After living together for over half a month, Director Lin had become accustomed to Ye You’s terse way of speaking.

Understanding that “they’ve already left” referred to the scream’s source and “keep driving” meant continuing towards the crow valley, Director Lin resumed driving.

“Ge…” Su Zi’an, taking up an entire row of seats, lay weakly and asked, “How much ability energy did you use in those ten seconds?”

Ye You replied, “A small portion of my plant-based ability energy.”

    Su Zi’an: “…”

A small portion of energy had completely depleted his own abilities, and it seemed like it wasn’t fully rewound.

If a peanut-sized amount of energy could do that, why did Ye You’s peanut-sized energy seem so abundant?

Comparing the goods makes you discard them ah.

Su Zi’an was down for only a short while before becoming interested again and asked, “Brother, who was attacking us just now? A zombie?”

    “Human,” Ye You said indifferently.

Su Zi’an naturally believed Ye You’s judgment but couldn’t help but wonder, “Why did he attack us? We haven’t had any conflicts with ability users these days.”

“Probably targeted you or Lin Yinyin,” Ye You said.

When they entered the base, only Su Zi’an’s and Lin Yinyin’s abilities were recorded.

The two attacks just now were aimed at Su Zi’an and the others, clearly indicating that the attacker didn’t know about Ye You’s abilities.

But since Ye You had just acted, his plant-based abilities had probably been exposed.

Director Lin, who was driving, glanced surreptitiously at the rearview mirror, and Lin Yinyin’s black beast ears perked up.

“Ge is joking. Who would attack someone just because they’re interested? It’s not like they’re trying to abduct a concubine.”

Su Zi’an chuckled, his gaze falling on Ye You’s face, and suddenly paused.

In the light, Ye You’s pale skin was almost translucent, and his features were strikingly flawless.

Su Zi’an couldn’t help but murmur:

“If it were really about abducting a concubine, it would definitely be directed at Ge.”
