Cloud Raising Little Zombies: Chapter 40
NECROMANCER GOD’S CULTIVATION
40. Undead Summoning and Necromancy Class Assessment
【My Zai Zai didn’t use Meditation, the whole live stream can testify!】
【My Zai Zai isn’t human, no need to worry, Teacher.】
【??? The one above, why are you insulting people?】
【What’s wrong with liches? Why the discrimination?】
【I thought Necromancers were already at the bottom of the world’s discrimination chain, but I didn’t expect even Necromancers to discriminate against others.】
Ye You had once seen a description of liches on the last page of 《Undead Creatures》.
Lich: A Necromancer who has abandoned life in pursuit of power, completely eroded by death energy and resentment.
Possesses all the abilities from when they were alive and an immortal body but loses humanity, becoming obsessive and insane—a complete undead creature.
Note: Every lich will be relentlessly hunted by the Holy Light Church until death.
Although Necromancers are shunned in the magic world, they aren’t exterminated on sight.
This empire’s first magic academy even has a Necromancy class, so Necromancers are recognized as an official profession.
But liches are different—they are synonymous with evil, hunted without rest.
Instructor Xia Zuo asked if he wanted to become a lich. Ye You… Ye You didn’t really have any thoughts about it.
He was a zombie, a type of undead creature.
Could he even transition from one kind of undead creature to another?
“I didn’t use Meditation, nor do I intend to become a lich,” Ye You replied.
Xia Zuo sneered, “Of course, your Necromancy talent is S-level. Why would you even need Meditation? Just being in the Undead Realm continuously exposes you to erosion and transformation by undead elements.”
Ye You: “That’s not something I can control.”
This problem had no solution.
An S-level Necromancy talent would inevitably be eroded upon entering the Undead Realm. What could he do? Not go to the Undead Realm? Stop being a Necromancer?
“You can leave the Undead Realm,” Xia Zuo said coldly.
Ye You didn’t respond.
Maybe other Necromancers would choose to give up on the Undead Realm’s creatures and focus solely on studying Necromancy in the magic world.
But Ye You wouldn’t, and he didn’t want to make such a choice.
He liked the Undead Realm and its creatures.
He wanted to contract every type of undead creature.
Ye You had seen live-stream viewers post comments about their hobbies, like collecting various bone models, butterfly specimens, or coins.
Ye You’s current hobby was collecting undead creatures.
Xia Zuo seemed infuriated by Ye You’s attitude. He took a step back, took several deep breaths, but still couldn’t suppress his anger as he said:
“You know you have S-level Necromancy talent, you know you’re being eroded… and yet you dare to stay in the Undead Realm for so long?!”
Ye You considered what an ordinary student’s reaction would be after being scolded by a teacher.
So, Ye You said, “I was wrong.”
【Still daring next time.】
【Pat Zai Zai, next time we’ll sneak into the Undead Realm.】
Xia Zuo’s expression eased slightly. He tossed out a piece of parchment and said, “This is a magic spell to block undead elements from entering your body. Learn it yourself.”
Ye You caught the parchment with slight surprise.
On the parchment was a spell, with handwriting that looked very fresh, as if it had been written recently.
Just as he was thinking of thanking him, Ye You saw ghostly blue flames rise.
As the flames dissipated, Instructor Xia Zuo had already disappeared.
A silent spell, cast without sound, leaving no chance for anyone to memorize the incantation.
Ye You took the parchment given by Instructor Xia Zuo and returned to the dormitory.
It was already late night in the magical world. Ye You pushed open the dormitory door, only to find the room still lit.
The light came from a small oil lamp placed on Ted’s desk.
His roommate, a towering figure like a brown bear, was sitting at the desk reading a book.
Hearing the door open, Ted turned his head. Seeing it was Ye You, his expression was a mix of surprise and delight.
“Ye You, you’re finally back.” Ted greeted him with a smile.
Ye You nodded slightly and returned to his desk.
He muttered a spell under his breath, and a few wisps of ghostly blue flames rose around him.
This was level-1 Necromancy, Hell Fire.
Ye You controlled the Hell Fire, making it float above his desk.
Using undead magic for lighting?
Ted was so shocked he didn’t know what to say.
Seeing Ye You sit down at his desk and unfold a roll of parchment, Ted hesitated for a moment before softly saying:
“Hell Fire consumes too much undead mana. If you don’t mind, we can share an oil lamp and read together.”
Ye You turned and refused, “I’ll only read for a while. It won’t consume much undead mana.”
“Oh, I see…”
Ted shut his mouth, but after a while, he couldn’t help but ask, “Ye You, where have you been staying these past few days? Was it at an inn outside the school?”
“The Undead Realm,” Ye You replied softly while mentally reviewing the spell on the parchment.
Undead Element Expulsion, a level-1 spell that could drive undead elements in the air away from the caster’s surroundings.
For someone with an S-level Necromancy talent, it was indeed a pretty useful spell.
Unfortunately, he himself was an undead being, so it was unlikely he’d need it.
Hmm… if he ran into Instructor Xia Zuo in the Undead Realm, he might still have to use this spell.
“Ye You, you’ve been staying in the Undead Realm all this time?” Ted asked in surprise.
Ye You didn’t answer, but Ted didn’t feel ignored in the slightest and continued on his own:
“Ye You, you must have gained a lot of skeletal creatures from staying in the Undead Realm for so long, right?”
Ye You, having just memorized the spell for “Undead Element Expulsion,” replied, “Not many.”
His skeletal creatures had suffered heavy losses in several battles to subdue skeleton soldiers.
He hadn’t intentionally replenished his skeletons, only occasionally casting “Undead Contract” on nearby wandering skeletons.
By the time he left the Undead Realm, Ye You’s skeletal creatures were reduced to a mere few hundred.
Compared to the undead army of tens of thousands of skeletons he had initially, this was truly pitiful.
“Um…” Ted looked a little embarrassed. “I’ve already become a level-1 apprentice mage and contracted over a dozen skeletal creatures.”
As Ted spoke, he glanced at Ye You’s slightly slender figure wrapped in the school uniform, coughed lightly, and said:
“The day after tomorrow is the class assessment. If Ye You doesn’t mind, I… I can help you capture skeletal creatures!”
【This… is so awkward.】
【My Zai really doesn’t have many skeletal creatures. Before Zai Zai left the Undead Realm instance, I even counted—only about 500.】
【Yes, not many level-1 skeletal creatures, but over ten thousand level-2 skeleton soldiers and a dozen level-3 skeletal Direwolves.】
【Is this the gap between ordinary students and study gods? Tearing up.】
【Sigh, roommate Xiao Gege is not having it easy either. Afraid of the dark and the undead, yet managed to overcome his fears within a week and contract over a dozen skeletal creatures. Really commendable effort.】
Facing Ted’s sincere expression, Ye You gave the coldest rejection:
“I’m afraid not. When undead mages enter the Undead Realm, they only appear at the location where they last left. The distance between us is a bit far.”
The kind of far that would take a few days of travel to meet.
【Right, different logout points, can’t play together.】
【How could ordinary students possibly keep up with an academic prodigy’s leveling speed? No chance of playing together.】
Ted looked a bit surprised. “Ye You, did you go very far in the Undead Realm?”
Ye You put away the parchment and said, “The undead creatures I contracted are now near the Bewildering Hills.”
“The Bewildering Hills?” Ted had never heard of the name.
He was dazed for a moment, then suddenly thought of something and picked up the 《Undead Creatures》 book beside him.
“Bewildering Hills, located northeast of the Wandering Plains, is an active area for level-3 undead creatures, the skeletal Direwolves…” Ted said in confusion, “The Bewildering Hills are a level-3 undead creature active zone. Ye You, don’t you barely even have skeletal creatures? What are you doing so far away?”
“Contracting skeletal Direwolves,” Ye You replied while flipping open 《Necromancy》.
Ye You didn’t know what the Necromancy class assessment would be, but merely contracting undead creatures and leveling up clearly wasn’t enough.
He didn’t even know how to bring undead creatures to the magical world.
Fortunately, the book 《Necromancy》 contained related spell incantations.
Undead Summoning, level-1 Necromancy.
For undead mages, Undead Summoning was the most basic and also the most powerful spell.
The strength of Undead Summoning depended on the strength of the undead creatures contracted and summoned by the caster.
While Ye You was still studying the spell, Ted was stunned by Ye You’s reply and asked blankly, “So… did you manage to contract skeletal Direwolves?”
Ye You’s response was to softly chant the incantation for “Undead Summoning.”
Undead Summoning required the caster to select a contracted undead creature and specify the location for its arrival.
Ye You felt the connection between himself and his contracted undead creatures grow extraordinarily clear.
He selected a skeletal Direwolf, setting its summoning location in the empty space between him and Ted.
Gray mist rose at the spot Ye You had chosen.
When the mist dispersed, a skeletal Direwolf as large as an adult man appeared in Ted’s line of sight.
Ted was so frightened that he jumped up in panic. “Ahhhhh—”
Ted’s screams echoed incessantly.
The skeletal Direwolf merely turned its head to glance at him. Its ghostly blue soul fire flickered within its hollow eye sockets, causing Ted to scream even louder and scramble onto the desk in terror.
The large, burly man with the build of a grizzly bear stood on the desk, his back pressed tightly against the wall. His comical appearance made the live-stream audience burst into laughter.
【Pfft, I’m a professional, trained to hold it in, but I just couldn’t help myself.】
【This is my cloud-raised “Skelly-chan.” Look at those hollow eye sockets—so adorable!】
【He looks so rugged and strong, but his courage is even smaller than mine. How is he going to be an undead mage?】
【Just look at his build. Doesn’t seem like an undead mage at all. Did the academy make a mistake? Enrolled someone who should’ve been a warrior or knight into the magic academy.】
Ye You wasn’t bothered by Ted’s high-decibel screams, but he was worried that if Ted kept screaming, the other students in the dorms might come knocking on the door.
So he cut off the magic flow, sending the skeletal Direwolf, which had only appeared for a few seconds, back to the Undead Realm.
Seeing the skeletal Direwolf disappear, Ted’s screams gradually subsided. However, he still clung to the wall, his face pale and his body trembling.
Ye You felt somewhat responsible for scaring Ted to this extent.
Thus, he patiently waited for Ted to recover.
Ted slowly slid down the wall, his legs giving out as he slumped onto the desk.
Though his face was still ghastly pale, he at least looked a little more alive.
“You’re so afraid of undead creatures—how did you manage to contract skeletal creatures?” Ye You asked curiously.
“It was, it was…” Ted finally found his voice after a long while, his face full of bitterness as he said:
“At first, it was Instructor Xia Zuo who forced me to do it. He lured skeletal creatures to attack me, and if I didn’t smash them apart, I’d be killed by them.”
Ye You, thinking of the parchment Instructor Xia Zuo had given him, remarked, “Instructor Xia Zuo cares a lot about his students.”
Ted: “…”
He was terrified of Instructor Xia Zuo’s sudden “care.”
Ted rubbed his face, forcing himself to move off the desk and onto the chair.
Once he was seated, Ted let out a long sigh of relief, as if he had narrowly escaped death. He then shared with Ye You:
“Actually, after contracting my first skeletal creature, I wasn’t as scared anymore.”
However, this “not as scared” only applied to skeletal creatures.
When it came to the skeletal Direwolf that had just appeared, even recalling it now made Ted’s legs weak.
Ye You thought for a moment and suggested, “You should contract a few more types of undead creatures.”
Ted: “…”
“Is this something you can just contract at will?”
Ted’s expression was complicated. “Ye You keeps saying he doesn’t have many skeletal creatures, but in reality, he’s even contracted a Level 3 skeletal Direwolf.”
Ye You said calmly, “Compared to the number of skeletal soldiers I’ve contracted, my skeletal creatures really aren’t that many.”
Ted felt like he had taken damage equivalent to a legendary spell.
He didn’t want to talk anymore and silently turned away, his back to Ye You.
Ye You was quite satisfied with his roommate’s silence. He picked up *Necromancy* and continued flipping through it.
For the next couple of days, Ye You didn’t plan to return to the Undead Realm.
From the earlier “Undead Summoning,” Ye You realized that summoning a single skeletal Direwolf to the magic realm consumed nearly a tenth of his mana.
And with over a dozen skeletal Direwolves already contracted, he had reached his summoning limit.
With less than two days remaining before the assessment, Ye You didn’t think he would be able to contract a Level 4 undead creature in time.
He decided to dedicate those two days entirely to studying necromancy.
Time spent studying always passed quickly, and in the blink of an eye, it was the day of the assessment.
The long-unseen Skeleton Lady came to knock on their doors, leading all first-year necromancy students to the specialized classroom for the assessment.
The assessment classroom was just as pitch-black as ever.
Unlike the tiered seating of the regular magic classrooms, this room was large and flat, with nine desks lined up along one side of the wall.
The students chose their seats on their own.
Instructor Xia Zuo stood in the center of the exceptionally spacious classroom and said, “The necromancy class assessments have always been practical duels. Any student who has reached the level of a Level 1 apprentice mage is eligible to participate.”
A student with a distressed face asked, “Instructor Xia Zuo, what if we haven’t reached the level of a Level 1 apprentice mage?”
Xia Zuo sneered, “Then you won’t qualify for the exam, and you’ll be marked as absent.”
As he spoke, his chilling gaze swept across the students. “Don’t worry, missing one or two assessments won’t be a big deal; it won’t affect your graduation.”
The implication was that if you missed too many assessments, you wouldn’t graduate.
“Alright, who wants to be the first to step up for the assessment?” Xia Zuo asked.
Lance, with his striking platinum blond short hair, immediately stood up, raising his chin high. “Instructor, I’ll go first!”
Xia Zuo gave a slight nod.
Lance strode to Instructor Xia Zuo’s side, looking arrogantly at the others.
He was well aware of the rules of the necromancy class assessments: each person takes turns challenging the victor.
By going first, if he could keep winning until the end, his assessment score would be extraordinarily high.
Meanwhile, everyone else would be stuck with below-average scores.
Lance had confidence in his strength. He intended to defeat every other student in the class, securing his position as the top of the necromancy class.
Xia Zuo said, “Who will be the first challenger?”
