Cloud Raising Little Zombies: Chapter 41
Accidentally posted c42 instead of 41 in the previous update😭.
NECROMANCER GOD’S CULTIVATION
41. Provoking my Zai, I will unleash all the soul fire on you.
No student stood up.
Some knew Lance’s strength and felt they couldn’t win.
Some thought that going up now meant facing an opponent with full mana and in peak condition—whoever went up first would be a fool.
As Xia Zuo’s gaze swept over the students a second time, Ye You stood up. “I’ll go.”
For a moment, the entire class’s attention fell on Ye You.
They still remembered that this was the first person to use Netherfire. His name was Ye You, and like Lance and Lucy, he hadn’t attended a single Necromancy class these past few days.
Some students revealed expressions as if they were watching a show.
Lance and Lucy were members of ancient Necromancy families. The magic taught in the first year was something they had learned since childhood.
But this guy was just a slightly more talented commoner. After missing so many classes, could he really beat Lance, who had both top-tier lineage and talent?
Lance, seeing Ye You actively step up to challenge him, raised an eyebrow slightly.
According to the Necromancy class rules, if no one challenged him, he would directly take first place.
At first, Lance had thought Lucy would be the one to challenge him in the end.
He and Lucy both belonged to Necromancy families and shared a bit of blood relation. Lance knew very well how difficult Lucy was to deal with.
He had already simulated several battle plans in his mind for facing Lucy, never expecting anyone else would dare challenge him.
Wait, was this guy someone Lucy sent to wear him down and deplete his mana?
Lance glanced in Lucy’s direction, only to see her giving him a “you’re done for” smile.
Heh.
Lance sneered inwardly. Unwilling to face him directly, so she resorted to such underhanded tactics.
“Hmm,” Xia Zuo nodded slightly at Ye You, his tone indifferent.
“The first match: Lance versus Ye You. The loser will fail this assessment, and the winner will face challenges from the other students.”
The assessment rules had no fairness at all, but no student dared voice any objection.
This was not just an assessment; it was also a competition for the title of the number one in the Necromancy class.
The true number one must have the strength to crush everyone else.
Lance’s gaze fell on Ye You as he approached, his lips curling into a mocking smile.
So what if you have an S-level Necromancy talent?
You’re just a commoner who only recently came into contact with Necromancy. How could you possibly compare to the centuries of accumulation of Necromancy families?
He planned to finish this quickly, defeating Ye You with minimal mana consumption before taking on Lucy’s challenge.
Xia Zuo said to the two of them, “If one side concedes or is unable to continue fighting, this assessment will end.”
Ye You nodded to indicate he understood.
Lance impatiently said, “Instructor Xia Zuo, just start already. I’ll send this black-haired kid off in less than a minute.”
【Pfft, this kid sure is confident. I just love watching confident kids turn into dejected ones.】
【This won’t do. Zai Zai, go! Unleash the wolves!】
Xia Zuo glanced at Lance indifferently.
Looking at Lance, whose chin was practically raised to his nose, Xia Zuo’s lips twitched into a forced, mocking smile.
He said nothing and simply walked over to the empty desk in the center of the wall, leaving the space to the two students.
“The first assessment begins,” Xia Zuo said.
As Xia Zuo’s words fell, Lance faced Ye You and quickly retreated.
The fragile body of a mage was their greatest weakness.
Every mage knew that at the very beginning of a battle, they must put enough safe distance between themselves and their opponent.
Lance saw Ye You still standing in place and couldn’t help but sneer.
This is what a mage from the commoners looks like—completely clueless about battle basics.
“Undead Summoning!”
While retreating to create distance, Lance chanted the incantation for Undead Summoning.
Gray mist appeared between Lance and Ye You, and two skeleton soldiers wielding bone knives and bone shields emerged from the mist.
“What the—what’s that?”
“Level 2 undead creatures! Skeleton soldiers!”
Gasps came from the students, especially those who had yet to contract even a single Level 1 bone skeleton. Their mouths hung open in shock.
They were all first-year students in the Necromancy class, yet some couldn’t even subdue a Level 1 bone skeleton, while someone could already summon Level 2 skeleton soldiers!
Is this the gap between them?
Why are there only two skeleton soldiers?
Ye You looked at the dissipating gray mist, confused.
A Necromancer could summon ten magical creatures of the same level at once.
If Lance could summon Level 2 skeleton soldiers, it meant he was already a Level 2 apprentice mage and should be able to summon ten skeleton soldiers.
Lance saw Ye You staring at his skeleton soldiers and smirked arrogantly.
“Stunned, huh? A commoner kid like you probably hasn’t seen such cool undead creatures before.”
Lance assumed Ye You was just a Level 1 apprentice mage and could at most summon ten bone skeletons.
Two skeleton soldiers were more than enough to crush ten bone skeletons. He didn’t even need to go all out.
【Hahaha, I’m laughing so hard.】
【How are you guys still laughing? My toes are curling from secondhand embarrassment.】
【Toe-curling +1, I’ve already dug out a three-story basement.】
Seeing Lance’s arrogant and conceited demeanor, Lucy, from the audience, raised her hand to cover her eyes.
Truly… unbearable to watch.
Ye You noticed Lance didn’t seem inclined to summon any more undead creatures and was even leisurely waiting for him to summon his own.
Though he didn’t understand where Lance’s confidence came from, Ye You still began chanting the incantation.
“Undead Summoning.”
A large mass of gray mist appeared in front of Ye You, and ten undead creatures emerged from the mist.
The moment Lance saw the undead creatures clearly, the smile on his face froze.
“Skeleton soldiers! How do you have skeleton soldiers?!” Lance’s eyes widened in disbelief.
The observing students also cried out in shock, their reactions even more intense than when Lance summoned skeleton soldiers.
Ted, clutching his trembling legs, glanced at the other students’ stunned faces and somehow felt a bit more balanced in his heart.
He thought, Skeleton soldiers? If you guys knew Ye You could summon bone wolves, you’d probably pop your eyes out in shock.
【Whoa, this skeleton soldier is my “Fish Bone”! Onward, crush them all!】
【Wuwuwu, my little skeleton isn’t in there. Zai Zai, can you summon my “Miracle Zai Zai” next time?】
【And mine too! Can I reserve a spot for next time? I’ll trade a lollipop for it.】
Ye You didn’t answer Lance’s question but instead controlled his skeleton soldiers to attack Lance’s two skeleton soldiers.
Ten skeleton soldiers against two skeleton soldiers left no suspense in the outcome.
When those two skeleton soldiers raised their bone shields to block the incoming long blades, other skeleton soldiers attacked from the sides, quickly smashing them into pieces with two or three strikes.
The ghostly blue soul fire floated out from the shattered skulls, announcing the death of the two undead creatures.
It was only then that Lance reacted. He could no longer care about conserving his strength and hurriedly pulled out a white bone wand, about the length of a forearm, from his school uniform robe.
In the audience, Lucy sat up straight. When she saw Lance take out the wand, she knew his trump card had been forced out.
No matter who won this test, neither side would walk away easily, and the victor’s magic power would be mostly drained.
That would be her chance.
“Undead Summon!” Lance began chanting the spell again.
With the aid of the wand, Lance’s casting speed was significantly faster than before.
A large mass of gray mist appeared in front of Lance, and sixteen skeleton warriors emerged from the mist.
Ted, seeing so many skeleton soldiers, momentarily forgot to clutch his trembling leg.
“Two skeleton soldiers earlier, and now sixteen? Isn’t it only possible to summon ten undead creatures of the same level?”
A student next to him said, “Haven’t you seen a wand before? A good wand can allow a mage to exert two hundred percent of their power.”
That student looked at the wand in Lance’s hand, his eyes filled with envy. “That’s a Dragonbone Wand, the exclusive wand of the Hodgson family’s heirs in every generation.”
“Oh, oh, it sounds pretty impressive.” Ted half-understood.
He thought, if a good wand could let a mage exert two hundred percent of their power, didn’t that mean Ye You was essentially facing two Level 2 apprentice mages?
Could he still win like this?
Lance’s gaze at Ye You turned angry and sinister.
This guy was actually a Level 2 apprentice mage!
His earlier actions were practically a joke.
If he had known the opponent’s level earlier, he wouldn’t have directly summoned undead creatures; he would have brought out the wand from the start.
The Dragonbone Wand’s ability to speed up spellcasting was just a minor feature. Its most important function was reducing the caster’s magic power consumption.
As a Level 2 apprentice mage, Lance could originally only summon ten undead creatures, but with the enhancement of the Dragonbone Wand, the number of undead he could summon doubled.
Lance commanded the skeleton soldiers to attack.
【What a cool wand. Where can we get this wand? Quickly arrange one for our Zai Zai.】
【I think I heard something—it seems only the heirs of some family can have it. This is bullying our Zai Zai for not having any backing.】
【Pat pat Zai Zai. Zai Zai, don’t cry. In the future, we’ll go to the Undead Realm, catch a bone dragon, and knock off all its bones to make wands. You can use a new one every day.】
Ye You withdrew his gaze from Lance’s wand and softly chanted a spell.
Ye You withdrew his gaze from Lance’s wand and softly chanted a spell.
What mage could resist the allure of a wand?
A bone dragon was too far-fetched.
Ye You decided to ask Instructor Xia Zuo after the test about other ways to obtain a wand.
The skeleton soldiers of both sides clashed. Suddenly, a white bone arrow shot out from in front of Ye You.
The bone arrow pierced through the skull of a skeleton soldier, and the ghostly blue soul fire floated out, dissipating into the air.
【Hehe, provoking my Zai Zai? Your soul fire just got scattered!】
Having lost a skeleton warrior right at the start of the battle, Lance’s expression turned grim.
He pressed his lips together and glared at Ye You.
How strong was this person’s mental strength?
He could precisely control the movements of his skeleton soldiers while simultaneously casting a complex spell like Bone Arrow.
Ye You continued chanting the Bone Arrow spell.
Each time one of Lance’s skeleton soldiers raised its shield to block a long blade attack, Ye You’s Bone Arrow would suddenly shoot out, piercing through the skeleton soldier’s skull.
These weren’t undead creatures Ye You intended to contract; if their soul fire dissipated, so be it.
Watching his skeleton soldiers’ numbers quickly equalize with Ye You’s, Lance’s eyes reddened in desperation.
Gritting his teeth, Lance directed his skeleton soldiers to attack autonomously and bypassed the battling undead creatures to approach Ye You.
Twelve meters, eleven meters… the distance was enough.
“Netherfire!”
The spell was cast instantly, and several strands of ghostly blue flames appeared around Lance.
Lance swung his wand, directing the Netherfire toward Ye You.
“Ah!” Many students in the audience turned pale.
Most of them were already first-level apprentice mages and had practiced sparring together these past days.
But their sparring only involved undead creatures.
Both sides would control their contracted undead to fight, and magic was used to attack the undead—not to target fellow students directly with attack spells.
Some students looked toward Instructor Xia Zuo, wondering if the Necromancy Instructor supported using magic to attack peers.
Xia Zuo slightly raised the black wooden wand in his hand but did not immediately step in to stop it.
When Lance had quietly moved closer, Ye You had already been observing his actions. Now, seeing the Netherfire about to reach him, Ye You quickly sidestepped.
The Netherfire brushed past Ye You, and as it exited the range of magical supply, it rapidly dissipated.
Xia Zuo’s grip on his wand relaxed slightly, canceling the spell he had been about to cast.
Students in the audience exclaimed in admiration, “What quick reflexes!”
“Yeah, I definitely couldn’t have dodged that.”
“Consider yourself lucky,” Lance said angrily, raising his wand to continue attacking, only to see a Bone Arrow heading straight for him.
Clang!
The Bone Arrow struck a bone shield that had suddenly appeared.
Xia Zuo lowered his wand and loudly announced, “The first test is over. Ye You wins.”
