Deus Ex Machina: Chapter 30

Chapter 30

“Ugh!” Dalia was slammed hard onto the ground. Meng Die pinned her down, hands restraining Dalia’s arms, and her knee pressing against Dalia’s head. In a cold voice, she asked, “Who are you?”

“Xiao Die, she’s just a little girl…” He Xun, clearly uncomfortable with the violence, softly pleaded with Meng Die, “Let her go first.”

“I won’t,” Meng Die responded firmly.

“Neither will I.” Dalia blurted out, suddenly gathering strength and launching Meng Die away, causing her to crash into a cabinet with a loud noise. Dalia quickly rolled on the ground and made a move to grab the box.

Meng Die swiftly recovered from the surprise attack, ignoring the mess around her, and rushed forward again.

“You two…” He Xun, frightened, shrank back, unsure of what to do.

“And to think I called you ‘Xiao Die Jiejie’! Is this how you treat me? Goodbye! Bleh!” Dalia grabbed the box first, made a face at Meng Die, and dashed outside. Meng Die chased after her closely. As they crossed through the martial arts hall, Meng Die picked up a spear and threw it forward with tremendous force, the spearhead embedding itself in the ground just in front of Dalia, cutting off her escape route.

Dalia stopped in her tracks, turning around, and asked, “You want to fight?”

“Disciplining a little girl doesn’t count as a fight.” Meng Die smiled coldly as she slowly walked toward Dalia.

Dalia wasn’t fazed. She was confident in her abilities and figured that since Meng Die was determined to block her, she might as well show her some force. Dalia was a straightforward person — if violence could solve the problem, there was no need to waste time thinking.

She shook the box in her hand and said, “If you’ve got the guts, come and take it.”

With that, both of them charged at each other.

Dalia was unarmed but put all her strength into every punch. Though she was smaller than Meng Die, she was a bit more nimble. However, Meng Die wasn’t an easy opponent either. While Dalia fought with wild, unrefined strikes, Meng Die used refined Eastern martial arts, skillfully deflecting Dalia’s attacks with minimal effort.

“Stop fighting!” He Xun rushed out, trying to break up the two. Dalia, seeing an opportunity, feinted and dodged Meng Die’s attack, then went straight for He Xun, grabbing him by the throat. Meng Die, reacting quickly, didn’t hesitate — she grabbed a long knife from a nearby shelf and flung it toward Dalia’s face.

The blade was too sharp, the strike too fast — it was impossible for anyone to avoid this lethal blow.

Dalia thought this might be the end for her.

With a loud “bang,” the knife suddenly changed direction mid-air, flying off and embedding itself into the ground. At the same time, the glass on one side of the martial arts hall shattered, and a figure seemed to descend from the sky. Before Meng Die could even react, a restraining net hit her wrist, pulling her backward and pinning her against the wall, rendering her immobile.

Right beside her face, a tiny hole had appeared in the wall.

It was Zhan Feng who had arrived. Before Meng Die could resist, he shot a tranquilizer dart at her, and Meng Die’s consciousness began to fade, quickly falling into a deep sleep.

“Xiao Die!” He Xun cried out, his emotions surging to the point where he began coughing violently. “Cough… cough… who are you people? What did you do to Xiao Die?!”

“Don’t worry, we won’t hurt you,” Zhan Feng assured as he restrained He Xun. “We just need your cooperation for a little investigation.” He gave Dalia a signal, and she took out the box and opened it, revealing a vial of liquid. After examining it closely, Zhan Feng said, “It’s Xing Bao. Mission complete.”

Zhan Feng and Dalia stayed at the martial arts hall waiting for Yang Jin, who, as usual, took his time, strolling leisurely with his gun on his back. Dalia grumbled, “Can you hurry up? What if they wake up? You’d have to clean up the mess.”

“Would that really be a problem?” Yang Jin replied. “I saved your life, remember? If it weren’t for my shot through the wall, you’d be sliced up like deli meat by now.”

Dalia snorted. “Tch.”

The three of them secretly transported He Xun and Meng Die to Feng Mang’s tower, erasing all traces of their actions, leaving no evidence behind.

Feng Mang’s tower was one of the most conspicuous buildings in the city, yet it was also remarkably easy to hide within.

Upon seeing the couple, everyone was surprised. The two looked plain and poor, inside and out. Feng Mang remarked, “I can’t even begin to link them to Qianfan.”

“Why not just ask?” Yang Jin said indifferently.

Meng Die was still unconscious and had been isolated in a separate room. Yang Jin and Zhan Feng were interrogating He Xun in another room while the others watched from behind the screen.

Feng Mang sipped on a cup of coffee, casually sitting on the side, his eyes glued to the screen. He still had the presence of mind to chat with Dalia, “You were out of contact for quite a while. What happened?”

“That woman caught me,” Dalia said. “She’s really sharp. I don’t think I did anything wrong, and I almost got taken down by her.”

Feng Mang responded, “I only know that the moment you lost signal, Yang Jin immediately set up the rescue operation. Yang Jin and Zhan Feng coordinated seamlessly, hardly wasting a second.”

“Is that so?” Dalia replied, “Why do I feel like it’s been forever?”

“It’s really just your illusion,” Feng Mang said. “Their actions were extremely swift, almost as perfect as one could hope for. But seriously, these two make quite the pair. After eight years apart, they cooperate as if they can read each other’s minds with just a glance.”

Dalia responded, “They were so far apart—how could you possibly see their eye contact? Yang Jin didn’t even show up the whole time!”

Bai Yunci, who had been silent, commented, “That’s Yang Jin’s style. He prefers controlling the overall situation from behind the scenes. If he needs to rush to the front lines, it means the fight has truly become intense, even brutal.”

“Is that how partners should be?” Shi Yixi asked Bai Yunci, “Without speaking, they just know what the other is thinking?”

“Yes, but it’s not easy,” Bai Yunci replied. “Both people need to trust and respect each other. It takes time to develop that level of understanding. Most importantly, they need to fully trust one another, having the courage and resolve to entrust their lives to the other person, and even be willing to sacrifice themselves.”

Shi Yixi fell silent.

Ying Si sneered, “Is it really that serious? Aren’t you blowing this out of proportion? It’s just a partnership. I don’t see anyone that important in your life.”

Bai Yunci calmly said, “I’m just a doctor.”

Inside the room.

He Xun appeared very nervous, shoulders hunched, his gaze erratic, not daring to look directly at Zhan Feng and Yang Jin. Zhan Feng sat upright, while Yang Jin appeared rather casual, with his chair pulled far back, legs crossed, arms folded, and his chin slightly raised as he observed He Xun.

“This is the new version of the Xing Bao,” Zhan Feng placed the syringe on the table. “You must have bought it a long time ago—why?”

“I…” He Xun muttered, keeping his head down, “I haven’t been well. I’ve seen doctors, and they said it was a genetic defect. They prescribed medicine, but it never worked…”

Zhan Feng asked, “So you know what the Xing Bao is for?”

“I’ve heard of it,” He Xun admitted.

“And you still dared to try it?” Yang Jin laughed. “You’re braver than most. This thing’s expensive—one shot a month, and you’re still willing to go for it?”

He Xun said, “When you’ve been sick for a long time, you start believing in anything, even gods and ghosts. This is just an injection. Besides, it actually works.”

Yang Jin, catching him off guard, suddenly asked, “Did you ever serve in Qianfan?”

“No,” He Xun smiled bitterly. “With my body? How could I?”

“Then why is your name on Qianfan’s retirement list?” Yang Jin said. “‘Wu Shen’ 1—doesn’t quite fit you, does it?”

He Xun replied, “I don’t know about Wu Shen. My dojo is called ‘Wu Zishen’—just a random name with a bit of Eastern flair. My wife and I run a small business. We’ve never harmed anyone or broken any laws. Why are you holding us? Who are you people?”

Yang Jin was about to answer when suddenly there was a loud *boom* from outside. The shockwave was so powerful that even Feng Mang and the others on the other side of the screen felt it. They immediately switched the feed, revealing Meng Die had blown the door off her holding room, taking part of the wall with it.

“Damn! Did this place even pass inspection?” Ying Si shouted. “How is it so flimsy?”

Feng Mang sighed, “How was I supposed to know there’d be so many freaks living here?”

Dalia rolled up her sleeves and said, “I’ll handle this.”

Yang Jin, being nearby, signaled Zhan Feng to keep He Xun secured and not to come out until instructed. He stepped out of the room himself.

The hallway was long, with glass windows on one side and a solid wall on the other. At this height, it felt like standing at the edge of the world. Meng Die, still in her tank top from earlier, was drenched in sweat, her hair a mess, but she wasn’t at all disheveled. Her gaze was firm, and her aura was imposing.

It almost felt as if Yang Jin had been overshadowed by her presence.

“Hand over my husband,” Meng Die coldly demanded. “Or I’ll level this place.”

Yang Jin chuckled, “Da jie 2, take a good look before you make threats.”

Meng Die spat, tied her hair back into a knot, and without another word, charged at Yang Jin. Her speed shocked him—it was like a flash of lightning. In the next moment, she was already in front of him, leaping into the air with a flying kick. Yang Jin crossed his arms in defense, but the force behind the kick was immense, forcing him back several steps. His arms felt as if his bones were about to shatter.

“Now you take a good look before you speak,” Meng Die threw his words back at him. Without waiting for Yang Jin to react, she punched him squarely in the chest. This time, he couldn’t dodge, and his whole body was sent flying.

*Cough*… As he landed, Yang Jin swore to himself that from now on, he’d steer clear of women.

Meng Die straddled him, hands gripping his throat. Yang Jin, however, caught hold of her arms, and the two were now locked in a contest of strength.

Yang Jin had never faced an opponent like this before. He even felt that her abilities surpassed his own.

What was going on?

“Where’s my husband!” Meng Die screamed, almost like a madwoman.

“Da jie…” Yang Jin managed to squeeze out a few words, “Let’s… talk this through…” He noticed a tiny flaw in Meng Die’s defense and seized the moment to take control, balling his fist and aiming a punch at her head.

Neither of them gave an inch, exchanging blows—one punch, one kick, back and forth, both ending up battered and bruised.

Dalia and the others arrived just in time to witness one whole wall shattered. Meng Die had grabbed Yang Jin and was about to throw him towards the window.

The window surely couldn’t withstand such force. If Yang Jin were thrown through it, he’d surely die.

“Stop!” Shi Yixi blurted out, and before the words had left his mouth, his body had already rushed forward.

Meng Die felt a gust of wind roaring her way, and then there was a sharp “crack” from her wrist, followed by a surge of excruciating pain. The force flung her to the ground.

Yang Jin also landed after experiencing a moment of weightlessness.

“You…” Shi Yixi rushed over to Yang Jin, helping him up. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” Yang Jin replied.

Meng Die, covered in wounds, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth, stood up despite the intense pain. The look in her eyes hadn’t changed at all. It was as if she carried an overwhelming hatred, ready to destroy everything in her sight.

That ruthless aura made no one dare take a step forward.

“Don’t move,” Zhan Feng’s voice called out from behind.

Meng Die’s gaze moved past the group to the rear. Everyone turned to see Zhan Feng holding He Xun hostage, with a gun to his head, threatening Meng Die: “You’d better not move, or I can’t guarantee what might happen.”

“You…” Meng Die gritted her teeth.

“Xiao Die.” He Xun, despite being held hostage, didn’t seem to harbor any resentment. He was simply too weak to fight back against these monsters. All he had was his concern for Meng Die. He only looked at her, caring about no one else.

“Stop fighting,” He Xun said with a bitter smile. “Don’t get hurt because of me anymore.”

Meng Die’s clenched fists gradually loosened.

“I haven’t properly introduced myself,” Yang Jin finally caught his breath. Meng Die was covered in injuries, but he had also taken quite a beating from her. He was puzzled—why did he never seem to get the upper hand in fights with women?

“I’m Yang Jin, from Qianfan,” he continued. “If you watch the news often, you probably know who I am. I can be honest with you about the current situation, but you also have to answer the questions I want to know.”

He Xun asked, “What do you want to know?”

“The distribution channel of Xing Bao, your background, and what connection you have with Qianfan,” Yang Jin said. “And, what the f*ck is ‘Wu Shen’?”

“That’s me,” Meng Die calmly replied.

“What did you say?” Yang Jin asked.

“Wu Shen is a codename,” Meng Die explained. “It’s given to the most outstanding warrior in Qianfan. There is only one.”

The active Qianfan members present all looked surprised. They had never heard of such a thing. Yang Jin said, “Da jie, stop messing around. I’ve never even seen this title.”

Meng Die wasn’t surprised at all and scoffed, saying, “That was over twenty years ago, and besides, do you think you qualify?”
