Genius Mechanic: Chapter 233.1

Slared Contaminated Zone(Territory-Wide Abnormal Move)

233. Follow-up

Proofread by Cloud Chip Cake and An

In the Third Star Domain Frontier Army’s highest-level conference room, a large virtual screen stood in the center, displaying independent communication feeds. Leaders of Frontier Army forces from across the Alliance had gathered for a joint meeting concerning the Slared incident.

For nearly a week, the Third Star Domain Frontier Army’s long-range fleet had been patrolling Slared’s vicinity. The impact of the heavy weaponry on Slared was ongoing—the planet was on the verge of disintegration, with significant energy leaks. In such an environment, the investigation into whether Chronos had perished was progressing slowly.

Wei Changyang stood in the Frontier Army’s conference room, presenting a phase report on the intelligence gathered over the week.

After the report concluded, the expressions of the Frontier Army representatives of various Star Domains turned grim.

“You’re saying you cannot confirm whether Chronos has been destroyed?”

“Not within a short time,” Wei Changyang continued. “The Third Star Domain is currently collecting fragments of Slared’s primary planet from space. We need to analyze and compare the residual energy signatures with past records of Chronos’s energy reactions. This process is lengthy, and we cannot provide a definitive answer anytime soon.”

Super S-Level pollutants are notoriously difficult to destroy. However, if one dies and disintegrates, residual energy in the debris should reveal the corresponding energy signatures. By analyzing the strength of these reactions, it could be determined whether Chronos had been destroyed.

The Frontier Army had captured Chronos multiple times, conducting similar investigations before. But this time, the level of destruction at the site was unprecedented, requiring significantly more time for confirmation. The biggest challenge lay in their data; most of it pertained to Chronos before it evolved into a Super S-Level pollutant. With the brief duration of the Slared incident, the available energy data was limited, making this investigation far more challenging than before.

“We will proceed under the assumption that Chronos has not been destroyed,” Wei Changyang said. “Unless we can confirm its energy signature has entirely vanished, we will continue our investigation around Slared. Therefore, we propose sealing the Slared perimeter indefinitely, keeping the chaos zone closed until the investigation yields results.”

The meeting lasted the entire day and concluded with the decision to incorporate the Slared Chaos Zone into the management area of the Third Star Domain Frontier Army.

When Wei Changyang exited the conference room, he encountered the commander of the Third Star Domain Frontier Army. After exchanging brief pleasantries, they went to the person-in-charge’s office.

The person-in-charge spoke, “I heard you took responsibility for the two young people who trespassed into the energy repository.”

“They bear no responsibility. Without them, the heavy weapon couldn’t have been delivered to such a deep location,” Wei Changyang replied, sitting on the sofa. As he lifted his tea, a familiar aroma wafted through the air. “You still like this tea.”

“But the sudden change in plans disrupted the balance of the heavy weaponry’s special energy fluid, leaving Slared in this state.” The person-in-charge sighed. “You took on the responsibility for the Third Star Domain, and I owe you for that. Even if you hadn’t spoken up, we and Lin Yi would’ve cleaned up after that brat surnamed You. Why bother?”

Wei Changyang remained silent, his gaze drifting to the desk in front of him. An old-fashioned photo frame rested there, containing a group photo.

In the center of the photo stood a heroic woman in combat gear, surrounded by the soldiers she had trained. It was taken after a gathering of the Third Star Domain Special Forces.

Wei Changyang had once been one of her soldiers.

You Yuying, a former special forces captain turned freelance mercenary, had sacrificed herself 11 years ago during a joint Frontier Army operation to eliminate Chronos. She was the only non-Frontier Army officer in the Third Star Domain’s history to be posthumously awarded the rank of Lieutenant General after sacrificing herself. A free-spirited and carefree individual, she had loved the frontier in her youth and joined the Frontier Army. In her thirties, she retired to pursue freedom, traveling across the star domains and dedicating herself to combating various pollutants.

Eleven years ago, she happened to accompany Lin Yi to a joint military exercise in the Third Star Domain and joined the operation to eliminate Chronos.

Without her assistance, the losses in that operation would have been far greater. The Third Star Domain owed You Yuying a debt that could never be repaid.

Seeing Wei Changyang looking at a group photo, the person-in-charge paused briefly and then smiled. “You know, You Su’s knack for causing trouble really is similar to hers.”

“Didn’t you help resolve the issue three years ago when he trespassed into the frontier and ran into Chronos?” Wei Changyang chuckled as well, shifting his gaze away. “We’re about the same. Besides, this time, he saved my life. The responsibility falls on me.”

“What surprises me is that he’s participating in the Mecha League’s team battles. With his rebellious personality, even Lin Yi couldn’t handle him. And yet, somehow, that KID mecha base managed to keep him in check. When I looked into it, I realized KID is no ordinary base,” the director said, showing interest in KID. “Do you remember when we participated in those military drills and kept losing to Lin Yi’s side? Do you recall Ying Lingfeng? KID has his son—Ying Chenlin, the mechanic who modified the energy compartment in the end.”

Wei Changyang was momentarily startled, recalling the young man with the surname Ying.

So that’s how it was.

The two continued chatting for a while longer. Though the military person-in-charge wanted Wei Changyang to stay and talk more, he excused himself, citing work, and left.

After departing from the Third Star Domain’s Frontier Army General Headquarters, Wei Changyang set course for the Star Alliance Headquarters. He needed to make a trip to the headquarters’ research institute.

During the journey, numerous reports were sent to him, and his aide-de-camp kept delivering updates.

“The starships from the various Star Alliance mecha bases have returned. The energy-transformed anomalous crystal has ended up in the hands of the Dawn Galaxy. Soon, we’ll need to negotiate with them about borrowing the anomalous crystal for energy research. This could greatly assist our studies on Chronos.”

The aide-de-camp continued, “The itinerary has been scheduled, to be arranged by the First Star Domain.”

“Thank you for your hard work.” Wei Changyang closed the exhaustive reports, feeling fatigued. Thinking back to his earlier conversation with an old friend at the general military base, he opened the star network to search for KID. To his surprise, the search results showed not a base but a rather large online store.

He blinked, thinking he had searched incorrectly. Clicking on the link, he suddenly realized that the online store was run by KID.

The aide-de-camp carried on. “Slared was utterly destroyed. It’s significantly impacting our subsequent research efforts.”

Recently, the research institute had been analyzing the energy reports sent to the headquarters, trying to extract data closely related to Chronos. Slared’s devastation had left few useful remnants, and the original samples had to be pieced together.

Wei Changyang paused slightly when he saw something in the online store.

“We only managed to recover some indigenous minerals from the remnants in space, but these samples were contaminated by the heavy weaponry…” The aide-de-camp, noticing his superior seemed distracted, tentatively asked, “Sir?”

Wei Changyang took a deep breath. “Did you say there were no indigenous samples?”

He handed his terminal to the aide-de-camp.

Confused, the aide-de-camp took the terminal, only to see entries like: “Slared—Limited Edition Snow Wolf Anomalous Crystals for Pre-sale!” and “Slared—Premium Snow Fox Pelts!” The entire homepage was filled with materials, minerals, and plants related to Slared’s pollutants.

The aide-de-camp’s expression darkened. “Rest assured, Commander. These unscrupulous businesses exploiting Slared as a gimmick for attention will be reported to the star network’s administration for closure.”

Wei Changyang said calmly, “This store is run by KID.”

The aide-de-camp froze in shock.

At that moment, an external communication came through. On the other end, a researcher from the Star Alliance Research Institute spoke with great excitement, “Sir! We’ve contacted several elite mecha bases. Regarding the issue of indigenous samples, we discovered that some bases still retain mineral materials from beneath Slared’s forest!”

Hearing about the minerals, Wei Changyang was struck by a thought. He quickly typed “volcanic rock” into the search bar of KID’s online store, only to see a new pre-sale page pop up—

“Slared Specialty Volcanic Rocks! Not your ordinary volcanic rocks! Don’t miss out!”

The excited researcher asked, “Sir? Do you need us to negotiate with the mecha base?”

Wei Changyang: “…”

The aide-de-camp: “…”

Wei Changyang: “Aide.”

The aide-de-camp responded with a grave tone, accepting the mission solemnly. “Understood, Sir. I’ll immediately mobilize personnel to secure all Slared-related materials from KID’s online store.”
