Genius Mechanic: Chapter 255

Asta Contaminated Zone(Star Domain Tournament Comprehensive Ranking)

255. Mechanical City

Proofread by Cloud Chip Cake

Inside the venue, all mecha teams were racing against time to repair their mechas.

The Dawn Galaxy, having recovered from the joy of two of their teams entering the second half, started running around observing the situations of various teams’ repair. They couldn’t help but break out in cold sweats for their galaxy’s mecha pilots. Especially upon seeing the strong teams pull out huge arrays of weapons, weapons whose data couldn’t even be found on StarNet. In contrast, some of the weapons from the Dawn Galaxy had to be reused repeatedly.

In the livestream room on Dawn Galaxy’s local platform, commentators analyzing the Star Domain Tournament said—

Commentator A: “Every year, in the second half of the Star Domain Tournament, strong teams carry out large-scale weapon replacements. We don’t need to worry about Gale for now. They have rich experience in Star Domain Tournaments, and have multiple sets of plans prepared every year.”

Commentator B: “But KID, ranked third, is facing a much higher level of difficulty. According to reports, their maintenance team was only recently assembled. Facing the high-intensity nature of a Star Domain Tournament, repairing all the mechas to perfect states within three days is a very challenging task. In such a competition, if your weapon arsenal isn’t rich enough, it’s too easy for other teams’ mecha pilots to target you.”

The repair time progressed quickly. Seeing other teams successively equipping their weapons, the commentator couldn’t help but grow heavy-hearted. “Has KID not started changing weapons yet? Other teams have already finished!”

“They haven’t started yet,” the other commentator said. “The new team’s too slow.”

Among the top eight teams, three of them were from the old top four. Aegis had fully replaced their weapons. Their tactical style had always been all-rounded, and they were also known as the strongest team in the First Star Domain. This description wasn’t just about their strong defensive weapons—the team excelled in both offense and defense, capable of advancing or retreating. Their team’s cohesion was rock-solid, and they were adept at executing a variety of tactical strategies… an all-encompassing, well-rounded team.

There’s no way to prepare specific tactics in advance for a team of all-rounders.

However, from external observation, the strategies of the other two teams could be seen. One of them was JIAZI. JIAZI’s strength this year was even greater than last year. They were a pure fire-attribute team, boasting extremely high attack power. They were the team with the strongest offensive capabilities in the First Star Domain. Facing such a team required solid defensive capabilities.

The next was ZUOY, who shared the same arena as KID in the first half but never faced them directly. They were a team representative of a water-attribute attack style. Their attack capabilities weren’t as strong as JIAZI, but this team had a combination of water-attribute soft control and strong attack. Their flexible attacking capabilities were exceptional. Facing them might require carrying weapons for control removal.

These three teams from the top four already showcased three completely different styles.

Looking back at the weapons KID carried in the first half, their toolman Stealth was unlikely to get close to the frontline of an aggressive team. KID’s Guardian’s two weapons, the Spatial Staff and the Wind Blade Broom, had strong control capabilities but lacked the ability to capture enemies at close range.

Once the two front liners were excluded from consideration, KID’s core outputs were limited to Trace and Sink. Trace’s dual wind-attribute cannons had already appeared and were bound to be targeted. Sink’s long-range Energy Cannon had environmental limitations, and against other teams, there was no chance they would allow such a long ranged output.

【Based on this analysis, KID’ll have a hard time in the second half!】

“In the first half, they relied on a dual-control and support system to pull off unexpected strategies. You should know, KID used to follow an offensive style. Suddenly switching to a control route caught the other teams off guard. But in the second half, facing such strong teams, though the dual-control system might still work, the supporting mechas’ weapons have to be swapped out, and Trace’s weapons will probably need to be replaced too.”

Even the commentators in the Dawn Galaxy felt troubled. “KID’s weapon arsenal is too limited, which makes it very easy for them to be targeted.”

Teams with sufficient equipment reserves can adjust their strategies based on other teams’ setups.

Take Gale, for example. They had already chosen control removal for their support and reinforced their frontliners. On the other hand, KID hadn’t yet picked suitable weapons.

The slower KID’s actions were, the more anxious the audience outside became.

On the third day of the repair period, KID finally completed all the mechas’ wear-and-tear repairs and began weapon loading. Compared to the other teams who replaced their entire arsenals, KID didn’t completely swap out their weapons. Observers saw KID’s mechanics skipping straight over to the Control mecha.

“Lucy’s Flying Flower Cannon was taken off…?”

The commentator paused upon seeing this. “And replaced with another cannon?”

In the maintenance area, the KID Control’s Enhancement Cannon wasn’t replaced. However, another weapon resembling the Flying Flower Cannon was swapped in. This new weapon had a smaller muzzle, and the only visible detail on it were flame-patterned markings on its barrel. It was unclear whether it was a control cannon or a support cannon.

After watching the weapon changes on the Control mecha, attention turned to KID’s other mechas.

The Tank replaced its shield, the Guardian swapped out its broom, and the Medical and Stealth mechas also seemed to be preparing for weapon replacements.

【It seems like everyone except Trace has replaced at least one weapon.】

【The weapon types look unfamiliar. Is the Guardian using dual polearms??? That new weapon is a traditional long spear, right?】

【Sink’s long-range Energy Cannon was replaced. That style… is it a Sniper Cannon?】

【Wait, Trace didn’t replace his weapons? Is he still using the same two weapons as before?】

“Artillery weapon replacements usually aren’t frequent, especially for wind-attribute offensive weapons. There are very few of this type of weapon available.”

The commentator was puzzled about KID still having Trace use dual offensive cannons. “But aren’t they worried about Trace being surrounded? With this setup, the Tank is standard, the Control’s setup seems to be one control and one support, the Guardian’s broom was replaced, Sink remains an Assault Medical, and Trace hasn’t replaced his weapons…”

After KID’s mechanics finished replacing everyone else’s weapons, they all headed toward the Stealth mecha’s location.

All eyes shifted to KID’s Stealth mecha. The Mirage Chain Mace was still in the weapon case, and several KID mechanics were performing final checks on it. KID’s mecha pilot Sink stayed near the weapon case containing the Mirage Chain Mace, seemingly trying to repair it.

By this time, the repair period was nearing its end.

The Alliance’s review team entered the venue, and all mecha pilots and mechanics were cleared from the maintenance area.

Upon seeing this situation, the audience watching the maintenance area in the livestream froze for a moment.

The commentator reacted, “The Stealth’s displacement weapon was switched to a curved blade, but the secondary weapon compartment still contains the Mirage Chain Mace with cumulative wear!”

【Qingf’s weapon hasn’t been changed yet, right?!】

【I remember the weapon compartment had the Mirage Chain Mace!】

【Using the Mirage Chain Mace is worse than using the displacement  Hook Claw, isn’t it? What’s KID’s strategy here?】

The League’s review team worked quickly. After confirming that all mechas met the League’s standards, the preparation countdown for the second half of the Star Domain Tournament began. The mechanics left the field, the mecha pilots entered, and all the pilots sequentially boarded their cockpits. A countdown for the second half of the Star Domain Tournament appeared in the livestream interface—only 15 minutes remained.

“Greetings, everyone. The First Star Domain Tournament’s ranking phase is about to begin.”

In the official livestream, the commentator quickly adjusted their pace. “All our mecha pilots are ready, and the top-eight ranking match is about to begin!”

Once all the mecha pilots completed their cockpit activations, the special Jump Zone at the Asta Contaminated Zone’s base station opened. The boundaries previously dividing Zones A, B, C, and D disappeared. Under the gaze of all viewers, a specially marked combat area in the center of Asta’s arena was redlined.

At this moment, a second-half match prompt appeared in the cockpits of all mecha pilots.

[Welcome to the Asta Contaminated Zone. First Star Domain · Star Domain Tournament] [Ranking Phase] Comprehensive, loaded Mecha Teams: 8/8, Mechas: 48/48]

[This match’s mode: [Special Points Accumulation Match], Currently underway is the Comprehensive Phase [Mecha Points · 15 Days]]

[Special Point Accumulation Match 30 Days (15 Days): All mechas enter the Asta Contaminated Zone’s Comprehensive Region for a 15-day (360-hour) elimination match between mechas in the same region. Teams can eliminate each other, and eliminated mechas are deemed out of the match. The winning team gains 1 mecha point per elimination. Rankings are determined by total mecha points.]

[Attention: This match introduces special rules. Every 12 hours, the system will designate a special red zone. All mecha coordinates within the zone will be fully revealed. Each special red zone will last for 3 hours.]

As soon as the combat format’s information was displayed, the eight teams in the base station’s Jump Zone were immediately teleported away.

When they reappeared, the eight teams had been randomly distributed to the edges of the comprehensive terrain map for the Star Domain Tournament. At this moment, the livestream focused on the newly designated comprehensive map, located in the central region of the Asta Contaminated Zone. It did not belong to any of the four zones designated in the first half.

This area was the Mechanical City, the center of the Asta Contaminated Zone. The massive city was filled with traces of mechanical operations. In addition to mechanical structures, there was an endless flow of special water sources in the city’s rivers, spreading throughout the Mechanical City. The rest of the area was covered with artificially planted special vegetation.

However, this area had now been completely abandoned.

The special water sources had turned into heavily polluted wastewater, the vegetation had undergone complete mutation, and pollutants roamed freely throughout the Mechanical City.

When KID and the others were teleported into the Mechanical City, they saw the grand and magnificent city before them. The originally massive mechas, now positioned within it, gave the illusion of truly walking on city streets. The buildings here were proportionally scaled up to accommodate large mechanical movements.

“Holy shit, this is too cool!” Ji Qingfeng’s eyes widened completely. “A city of mechas ah!”

Lin Yao eagerly landed on the city street, “The mine before was already huge, but this is even bigger!”

Huo Yan explained, “Asta is an abandoned fortress, originally designed as a fortress for machinery. Look at the map. We’re now in the Outer City. The Outer City is a parking area for mechas and other large machinery. The Inner City was originally designed as a residential area for humans… but all the street designs here are for mechas. Before the pollution occurred, Asta was truly the Star of Machinery 1.”

“I want to go sightseeing,” Lin Yao said.

Ji Qingfeng: “Are there any city landmarks? Let’s take a photo.”

At this moment, You Su poured cold water on the mood, “I suggest you don’t wander around. The rulebook just came out.”

Ji Qingfeng: “Huh?”

Just as Ji Qingfeng and Lin Yao took a few steps forward, a special red light suddenly shone down from above. Everyone looked up to see large patrol machines moving across the sky above the Mechanical City. When the red light shone down, the radar coordinates immediately displayed the positions of the two KID mechas.

The red light appeared too suddenly. Radar coordinates for multiple mechas appeared, exposing many mechas from various teams on the radar.

“Retreat!” Ying Chenlin glanced at the radar and immediately shouted.

Lu Xi found a small alleyway between city buildings. “Over here, we can hide!”

【Huh? Wasn’t the exposure of mechas supposed to be random this time?】

【This is too cool! Randomly exposing coordinates!】

【Moving patrol ships!? This is way too hard!】

【I suddenly get it… why 8 teams have to play for 15 days. This map is insane.】

In the KID livestream, the audience had just finished listening to the commentator’s analysis of the map. When they turned back, they saw KID standing in a line, hiding in a small alley.

【What?! What are they doing?】

【??? How did they even find a hiding spot?】

The KID mechas quickly ran forward, squeezing into the narrow alleyway.

The alley was cramped. As soon as Lu Xi called everyone over, the mechas began squeezing in one by one. By the time everyone had crammed in, Lu Xi was pushed to the very back, tightly pressed against the wall.

Lu Xi weakly said, “…Stop squeezing.”

Ji Qingfeng ended up at the outermost position. Seeing the red light sweeping over from above, he bumped further in with his hips. “Move, move, move! Yao Bao, a little further in!”

Lin Yao, caught off guard, was pushed back and bumped Ying Chenlin further inside. “Chenlin, move in more.”

Ying Chenlin was squeezed up against You Su in the back and quietly asked, “Can you move in a bit more?”

You Su stepped back half a step, creating a suitable amount of space.

“Let’s just hide for now. Hurry and read through the rulebook while there’s time,” Huo Yan said.

Ying Chenlin opened the rulebook for the Mechanical City and tried to finish reading it as quickly as possible.

The KID livestream viewers were speechless. The group crammed together here—weren’t they afraid of being wiped out by other teams? There wasn’t even extra space to hide!

Huo Yan said, “We need to find the next spot quickly. There’s no room to maneuver here.”

“Wait a moment, wait until the patrol ship above passes,” Ji Qingfeng looked upwards.

Suddenly, Ying Chenlin noticed a coordinate flash briefly on the radar. “Wait!”

Ji Qingfeng paused mid-step as he was about to walk out.

At this moment, all the KID mecha pilots heard a noise from above. Their expressions shifted slightly, and as they looked up, they saw a fast-moving mecha darting over the alley from above.

【Fuck, a mecha just jumped over!】

【That’s JIAZI’s Stealth mecha! They’re conducting reconnaissance!】

【JIAZI’s that fast? They probably haven’t finished reading the rulebook!】

KID broke out in a cold sweat from the sudden appearance of the mecha that jumped over.

Ji Qingfeng patted his chest. “Good thing, good thing, they didn’t look down.”

Just as everyone breathed a sigh of relief, they suddenly heard another sound. When they looked up, they saw the mecha that had jumped over turning back and crouching above the alley, looking down at them. Six mechas met the gaze of the Stealth mecha.

Ying Chenlin: “They looked down.”

The livestream: “…”

The next second, Ji Qingfeng greeted them proactively, “Hi, fancy meeting you here ah.”

TN:

LMAO What the hell KID?!😭🤣💀 As usual Da Feng has zero situational awareness🤦‍♀️😂.
